Started trying to grow some fodder for the chickens... I have yet to let them out of their new pen to free range and there is not a stitch of green in the place. So I have had my barley out for one day in trays and it is already showing signs of sproutage (is that a word).... anyway was really excited...

Really not much work so far... Anybody else do any? What works best for you?

My 16 younger and 7 older chickens are getting along great. The Buff Orps keep all the younger in their place. One Buff might be going broody not sure yet.... wasnt able to spend much time down there today...Will see after I drop kids off at preschool in the morning... ah freedom!

Rocky spent his first time outside today in our little flight pen! Now he's back inside under the lamp. I feel so bad for him, our only other chick we had with him didn't make it. They both had splayed legs and hers was so bad she just didn't make it through. Now he is all by himself

Poor Rocky he's all by himself!!! I want to get him at least two little friends, because our only other chicks (the marans) are way to big for him and are about 8 weeks old and he is only about 3. He seems so lonely...

DST how far away are you from me, I have some 4 week old chicks

I grow wheat... it takes 5-6 days..then I feed it. So simple and easy and another favorite treat for the birds and rabbits.

When you ferment grains, you get two different products depending on how long you ferment it. The first product will be lactic acid from our lovely probiotic organisms such as lactobacillus and bacillus subtilis etc. This makes some bubbles and a sour, yougurty smell. If you leave this too long, the lactic acid producing bacteria will essentially produce so much lactic acid that they raise the pH too high for them to live. It is at this point that you create the perfect conditions for alcohol producing yeast to start flourishing and producing alcohol.

The lactic acid stage is a nice fermented feed. The alcohol stage is a nice sourdough starter. I make my own sourdough starter from fresh, organic wheat, barley or rye. Grains grown out in the open will be naturally bathed in windborne wild yeast. I grind the grains in my Kitchenaid grain mill attachment and I put them in a container with some pineapple juice which actually has the perfect pH to hasten the killing off of lactobacillus and to promote the growth of yeast which will let my bread rise. If you have gluten issues or if you just want to stop paying so much for yeast that was made with who knows what kind of grains and processes, this is the way to go.

But I digress. My point is that you CAN make drunk chickens but only if you ferment for too long.

Lost one of the eggs today. The one that suppose to hatch yesterday had a bad smell. Took a flashlight and looked inside, the chick looked like the 2 week old picture posted on a candling thread. Opened it up and you could see a little head and body but not fully developed. Wonder what happened? On a good note, the one that was suppose to hatch today is making noises so hopefully any time now.

Good morning! I hope everyone has a good Thursday....it's getting closer to the weekend!

All this talk about FF has piqued my interest so I started a small batch last night. I'm just doing their crumble right now. I found a mill close to my house so I'm going to see what they have. I'm thinking steel cut oats might be good to try also.

Time to get ready for work.

why is it the longer the week goes on the more
tired I get? I really don't get to sleep in all that
much on the weekend but by Monday I'm not as
tired and I've done as much work over the weekend
as I do during the week........hmmmmmmm.
