Hello I currently live in Asheville, but am moving to Candler this week!! We are looking into getting some chickens and were wondering what the ordinances/regulations were for keeping chickens out that way are. If anyone can help it would be great!! Sorry if this was covered earlier in this thread but I didn't want to go through over 3k worth of posts lol... Thanks in advanced for the help everyone!!!!

CSB, hackle! Both neck and saddle hackle. Oh, the man-child is gettinga big box of feathers this year! Thanks!

Any certain feathers from red golden pheasants? I wont pull them, but when the pheasants molt them, I pick them up.
RF, from the pheasants I think he'd find a use for anything you collected!

Oh, and I'm not pulling from my roosters, either. I'll trim them up, but not pull!

I see we have a biologynerd! I love it! What do you do, biologynerd?

all colors or only certain colors?
I am thinking that since I skin them when
I process I'd just pull out and save them.
no sense in wasting them if there is a use for them

Hi Headie

I found a lot of conflicting info when we started getting chickens so I just googled the main number for the city of fayetteville and they transfered me over to the ordinance department and they gave me all the info I needed. Remember if you are moving somewhere with an HOA they can override the city's rules (We have friends that are on almost 2 acres, but the HOA says no chickens they had to make a clearing out in the woods & build a coop & run for them haha).

Hollow-- making fishing lures is such an awesome idea to do with the feathers. I love creative ideas to upcycle, I hate anything going to waste!

Hope everyone has a great Sunday!

CSB...any colors will do, but the barred feathers are tops! I know there's a way to dry the skin with feathers on, but I haven't researched that. Since fly tiers can buy hackle capes like that, I should be able to find out how. Maybe just salt drying them would work. I hadn't thought much about butcher birds. Silly me! Guess I need to go research!

Annnd....salting or boraxing the skin is the way to preserve the whole she-bang. CSB, when you are butchering some roos, let me know. I'll collect some skins from you and test it out!

So, it is day 3 since my chickens were attacked. The final 3 missing have never returned or been found. I have lost 18 of 23. Anyone looking for feathers could have their pick of just abut any color yesterday before we cleaned up. :(

Kanga,

I'm so sorry. That's not how I'd choose to get feathers. :(

I've lost numerous birds before to dogs or foxes, and all but once it was because I left a door open. I keep wanting to write that I know how it feels, but I only know how it felt for me. I hope your remaining birds do well, and you get your flock rebuilt with no setbacks.
