Hi Everyone! After reading the posts, I am re-evaluating my meal worm position... they are a great source of protein.

I think the link to the instructions said to start with 400. Is that about right? Where is the best place to buy them? They can't be as bad as the horn worms that infest my tomatoes in the summer. I manage to pick those off and squish them.

Hope everyone is having a great day!

I bought 1000 for $10 from someone in Raleigh to start out..found her on CL. I would check CL..then look around here, I have seen many classifieds for meal worms. Plus there are websites you can order from.

You guys are really tempting me with the mealworms! My brother raised them for a science fair project when we were kids and kept them going for a long time. Since I got the chickens, I've been tempted to do it for fun, but I don't know that it would actually save me much money... I buy them by the pound on ebay and they're dehydrated. Mealworms have a lot of water in them, so 3 pounds of dehydrated mealworms is equivalent to a LOT of fresh ones. I think it would take a long time of running the operation before it made up for the initial setup cost and the cost of the oats or whatever is used for bedding. Also, I worry that I just wouldn't be able to produce a very large quantity of them without a giant setup. Idk. I am super tempted though and if you guys all start doing it and posting about your successes, I might have to join you. Please post pics if you decide to do it!! :)

Several of us have horses and other animals besides just chickens. I don't have a picture of my horse on here hmm might have to put one on.
Wow! a lot of ppl have horses!

I am sad to say, I have no horse, and I fear I will never have one. ):
But I do have hundreds and hundreds of mealworms. I started with about one hundred and have fist fulls of babies now. It took a couple of months to get to this point because I started with so few. I got mine at Petsmart: which is not the most cost effective way to start up. I keep the beetles separate from the worms and move the beetles every month to keep them separate from the eggs. They are very easy to raise overall. I just throw a few bits of apple or carrots in every couple of days, and that's about it, other than the sorting. I keep them in a three draw plastic bin from Target. I do not use oatmeal for the substrate however, I prefer wheat germ so I can sieve out the worms and beetles and the wheat germ falls right through during the sorting. I also keep my wheat germ in the freezer at least 24 hours to kill any no see ems that could be living in it before using it as substrate. They were staying out in the garage when weather was warm, but I fear it has gotten too cold for them out there, so I moved them to the laundry room. Needless to say my husband is not thrilled with this turn of events.

I recommend you guys give it a try. It is very easy as well as interesting as well. Kids love them too!
