Chicken moat sounds fabulous, I will have to google how to make one. I don't really have much land at this point, but a little one could be fun. Can't wait to have a farm!

Curious, besides a heat lamp (which when I had a brooder lamp going 24/7 back in Sept my electric bill jumped from about $130 to $225!!!!) what do you guys do to keep your chickens warm?
Obviously I have to keep the heat lamp going right now for the little ones, but long term can't afford to do so.
We didn't have to do anything last year being so mild, but I'm getting the feeling this is going to be a COLD winter!!!

Most chickens do not require any heat. They just need a good coop to keep out drafts and allow their own body heat to keep them warm under their feathers. My Dutch have the have their coop closed a little tighter, but that is it. You have to make sure not to close up too tight or you can get moisture build up and that can lead to respiratory issues.

That's a big one! What'd you do with it? Was yours all super friendly like a cat? Mine was, guess it was too used to humans. I always heard of them being mean & hissing at you (or playing dead of course!)

I love the idea of a living fence, though I think it would be eaten at my house!

Spent all day super securing my run before we go out of town, I'm pretty confident I won't be losing anymore to opossums, but we will see...

Hey everyone! I am in the lake Norman area and have a couple of ? About winterizing our coop. I have 10 hens and 2 never leave the coop, they are very silly. My waterer is a hanging unit in the run and feeder is in coop.

I was planing on opening the two high vent windows at the top ends of coop and leaving door open. The rest of windows would be closed. Pine shavings on flooring and straw in boxes. Is this enough, should we add sand and then shavings and straw? Thanks is advance for any suggestions!

Chickens are more resilient than they get credit for generally. The coop itself should be fine if you stick to your plan. If your run is exposed to wind, you may want to cover the side that gets the most wind with plastic. Other than that, your bigger worry is the water freezing. I'd fill it with warm water before you go to bed and check to make sure it hasn't frozen first thing in the morning. Better yet, bring it inside the coop if you can. Doesn't have to stay warm, just above freezing. If it's outside in the run, it'll surely freeze. Maybe put petroleum on the combs/wattles before you go to bed when the temps drop below freezing just to be safe.

Nice ones!
. I've seen this done with chocolate, too. Quail eggs, though, instead of chicken. Lovely little chocolate eggs!
How would you get the chocolate inside? I'm honestly thinking of doing these chocolate eggs for some of my friends for christmas... like dye some eggs green and red and maybe try and paint them to personalize them for specific people.. I just need to figure out how to get the chocolate inside...
