Anyone letting a broody hatch right now? Found one of my silver spangled hamburgs sitting on a jumbo clutch up in the hayloft. I have no idea how long she's been up there, but the dogs were chasing her this morning before anyone else was out (she's totally fine and CRABBY).

I moved the eggs and finally got her back on them in one of the upper nesting boxes. Honestly, it's not going to fit her and 20 some chicks, and it'll be too high for them anyhow.

If it wasn't one of my particularly flighty breeds, I'd make a nesting box under the bank of boxes that was big enough for them all to fit in. I wasn't planning on doing any chicks since we're looking at a likely move, but without knowing how developed they are, I'd hate to stop them now. I might try candleing them if she gets off long enough. But darn, she's tge meanest broody I've ever had. I don't really 'need' the eggs, so I'll leave her be.

Suggestions? (Or should I find the breed thread?)
Got one setting again, I broke her about a month or so ago and she's back at it. So she is setting on some eggs to see if they are fertile or not.

I'll be surprised if they are not fertile, with all the boys we have. Hopefully, it was our ssh boy and not a silkie or cochin bantam. I don't mind her sitting, but I can't bring her into the house and I'm not sure the coop and nesting boxes are the safest place for her and the babies. When I do move them, is there a cutoff point when they absolutely should not be moved?

We really were not ready for this.....

Quote: Some hens will never be movable, others will. If I don't have to move I don't move at all, but if I have to I move at night. I make sure I got the place ready for her and eggs and than come night I move her and eggs (in a bucket with some of her nesting stuff) at one time. If I move a broody they tend to be put into a large plastic dog crate. I'll wait awhile and see if shes sitting on them before I'll leave her for the night. Then I re check a few times the next day to make sure she is still on them.

Well I am not too happy about starting my day off with an ice cold shower, bloodshot eyes, and being thoroughly chilled to the bone, and all before my first cup of coffee

. But Lake Ramirez is officially on the move now.

We already moved once- from hay loft into a nesting box in the coop. We just knew she was out overnight the night before and chased by the dogs in the morning. She was NOT happy to be moved. I'll have to move one more time because there's no way she and all the chicks can fit in that one nesting box, and it's too high. Will get ready and then do it either when it's really dark or when she's off the nest eating. Right now, I have the food/water right inside so she won't leave and go broody somewhere we cant find her. Just wondering if there's a better cut off time for moving. ...
