Deworming Question-- I can't remember what the minimum age is. And does anyone remember the dosing for Zimecterin Gold? I'm pretty sure that's what I used last time. I noticed a couple have some pretty watery poo lately, figure try that before they start laying and I can't have eggs? Or should I just let it go, we give them table scraps could have been something they ate? I thought I remembered people doing theirs twice a year regardless of signs just to protect them?
I would rotate onto safeguard (fenbendazole). Its good to rotate dewormers so that the worms don't develop a resistance to any single medication and fenbendazole is really good stuff, plus its almost impossible to overdose them with it. I dose mine once every three months with a different dewormer but my birds have an unusually high parasite load because of all of the wildlife that visits my pond (where my chickens drink from). I treat the pond for parasites three times a year. Its a pain, but we've gotten into a rhythm with it and everyone seems to be much less plagued by parasites. Who knew that having a free range flock in the swamp would be such a pain? Being more inland, you're probably good with twice a year, but I would rotate each time. You have a lot of choices:pyrantel, fenbendazole, valbendazole, praziquantel, moxidectin, ivermectin etc.

remember many wormers require a withdrawal time for eating the eggs from the hens

something to keep in mind when worming

if you have enough birds you can split the flock for worming but that has it's draw backs too

Getting ready to expand my run from a 15' diameter trampoline to a 20' by 40' pen. I have some new peeps coming in April so I have plenty of time to work. I'll be building one panel at a time and doing it that way won't take a lot of effort. It will be about 8' tall and will have poultry netting ontop to protect the flock from hawks. Any suggestions for the max number of chickens a pen this size should hold?

Thanks for the worming tips.

Welcome BuckPapa!

Jaded-- bird netting is a great idea, around where I am hawks are my biggest predator. Make sure you have it all sealed real good, the first time we had a small gap and the stupid hawk went it and couldn't get out, ripped up more than half my birds!!! If I remember correctly it's a minimum 4sq feet per bird right? You can get away with less if they free range I think.

You have to keep 'Chicken Math' in mind with ALL building projects.

Hi NC chicken friends! I have not been on in a good while because of work and school and chores here. I finished the first part of my master's program and now have my k-6 teaching license. 5 classes to go to finish! I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and is looking forward to a happy new year.

I am petsitting for my friend's house chicken and have been trying to figure our what she is! My friend got one of my eggs this summer and "Liza" hatched about 5 months ago. My friend has tried bringing her over to my house to live with my flock but Liza refuses and will hide under my friend, fly to her shoulder or get into the car to leave with my friend. She clearly does NOT want to live outside with my flock so she lives inside at my friend's house with her family.

Anyway, Liza is here for a week and a half and I've gotten her to go out during the day but, she comes up on the porch and waits at the front door of the house to come in at night so I let her in and she goes to bed in a cage I have in the house. It is crazy! Hubby is not thrilled but since it is only at night and she sleeps in her cage, he is obliging her.

I got some pictures of her and wondered if anyone could pinpoint who her father is. We know that one of my silkie hens is her mother as she has 5 toes just like them and her egg was taken from their nest box. The options for her "dad" are either my americauna rooster, Zippy, or my little porcelain d'uccle rooster, Elvis. As you can see, she has the puffy head, cheeks and beard like the silkies. She also has the extra toes on her feet. Her feet are very feathery like the d'uccles. My silkies are all black - well, one is a splash, one is a wheaten and one is a blue but they all look black to me! She is about the size of the silkies. She has not laid an egg yet....

I'm not sure what color you would call "Liza"...? Any thoughts on which rooster could be her dad? I know very little about chicken genetics so any help is appreciated! :)
Angela

Zippy, Ameracauna roo - possible dad?

Elvis, d'uccle roo - possible dad?

Liza - "whose my daddy?"

Liza, looking kind of evil

Liza stretching her neck

Liza suspiciously eying my camera/phone

Liza - "can you help me find my daddy?"
