I didn't even try to let my chickens out today. Already close to 3 inches of snow (how much we got two weeks ago). Love your picture, @ChicknsRock ! That's pretty much what all my chooks did last time it snowed!

Got them all nice and cozy though with a tarp over the run and 4 whole bags of fresh and dry wood shavings. And on top of the terrible weather, my oldest hen gave me her first egg in 2 weeks. A nice surprise for sure. :)

I plan to thoroughly spoil everyone with leftovers from the fridge tomorrow.

Thank you again to everyone who has offered condolences about my silkie. I am still very upset about it and have banished that dog from my presence and my home for the foreseeable future.
Of course my personal consolation has been to look at eBay auctions and Catdance silkies (so sad that kelar of Catdance is no longer shipping hatching eggs) and maybe if next week is warmer I will consider ordering hatching eggs for my first use of the incubator for the year.

Stay warm, everyone! Looks like school will be out for the rest of the week. When I was growing up, my parents didn't have to ask me twice to play outside all day in the snow. Only came in when I was so cold that the only way to warm up was a bath and hot chocolate. Now you couldn't pay me to be out in the snow all day!!!!

RF- Your dog is ridiculously cute!!!

ChicknsRock- GORGEOUS picture!

Some of my birds love the snow, others don't. My big ol' tom (not the brightest thing) just stood there in the snow letting it pile up on him, with his head tucked in. After an hour DH had to go pick him up & put him back in the coop!

I'm going to let the kids go out and play in it awhile this morning before the rain comes through. For the past 2 years I bought my baby a $40 snow suit & the tags never came off of it & I had to give them away. Then this year I figure, this is stupid we never get snow I'm not buying one. Sure enough! She can't last out there long, even with layers I don't have anything waterproof for her. My older boy at least has a hunting coveralls that keep him dry.

Thanks Dutchbunny, shes a toy poodle that was a stray a couple years ago. Shes oldddddd, not many teeth left, if any, so most of the time her tongue hangs out. She can't see much so she goes by sound or memory any more. She loves the kids and my son decided she needed shoes the first year she showed up. When I got them, I never thought she would ever wear them, since we don't get alot of snow or ice. She is not amused by her shoes and even less so with the snow. But at least she leaves the shoes on.

In the spirit of Spring....I'm offering a Chicken Processing Class in March.

https://www.facebook.com/events/671663596223087/

When: March 15, 2014
Time: 10am
Where: Franklinton, NC
Cost: $25

Are you ready to take that extra step to being self sufficient? Do you have a yard full of extra roosters? NDH is offering a class to learn how to humanely process chickens. We will go over hand plucking and skinning along with learning some of the differences in various meat bird breeds. Bring any extra roosters/chickens you have and we will instruct you how to process them for your own farm fresh poultry recipes. If you don't have your own birds to bring, we have a few of our own to process or there will be some available for you to purchase, process and take home. Please let me know ahead of time how many you will be bringing or how many you would like to purchase.

Please RSVP as soon as possible there are a limited number of spots available.

All knives, tools, and gloves will be provided for you to use. Please make sure you wear old comfortable clothing.

What to bring:
Extra Roosters/Chickens

Cooler full of ice(if you are bringing birds or take any home)
Bagged Lunch
Chair

I'm definitely interested in this and the date's good for me and you're nearby. I joined on Facebook. Is that all I need to do to reserve my spot? Thanks very much for offering this and I'm looking forward to it!

This is urgent! we are supposed to be hit with a ice storm pretty soon loosing power.....of all things I was worried about everything around me....my refrigerator, stove, heat! I TOTALY forgot about my 12 chicks in the garage!!! They are 6 weeks and 1 day old today.....their brooder temp set to 70ish.....my house is 65, and in my garage its chilly enough for me to get goose bumps and have to wear a sweatshirt. right now, outside it says its 30 degrease. I don't know how cold my garage will get....better yet my house when we loose our power! I have NEVER hatched or had chicks in the brooder in the winter.....for the fear of THIS happening! what do you guys do to keep your chicks warm when the power goes out!?!?!?!? I don't want to loose these babies! hatched them from my laying hens....my first fertile flock ever. (just started keeping roos in June)

I was thinking one way to keep the chicks warm is to keep a fleece blanket I don't really care for anymore in the brooder.....along with some hot hands covered in paper towel (so the chicks don't eat them) will this work? I really need to find out what you all do pronto before it starts showing or raining! (so I can get out to the store if I need to.) Everything I have thought of other than the blanket and hot hands involved needing heat, which would not work.

will you guys have an outage too? I don't know what the heck to do!

I think you are on the right track.......if it was me I would bring the brooder into the house.
I would put the heat packs under the brooder box with a towel between the heat pack and
brooder. I would not put a blanket into the brooder but I would wrap it around the base of it
and up the sides some. I would also put the heat packs only at one end so the chicks can
move away if they need to I would think no more than two packs at a time but I don't know
how big your brooder is. Maybe someone else will have a better idea.
