North Carolina

Hello everyone, ive been so busy with new ( now 6 mos there) job and travelling back and forth from the coast to my farm, i havent been on here in months! I also got married, just last week. So my girls finally stopped molting and resumed laying well. Back to 3 of them laying again. My mother has decided that she wants chickens, actually she wants eggs and manure, and for the chickens and coop to live with us here in snow camp. So, I need to re-find the nc person who was building chicken tractors to sell. I think it was "jdoliviera" but i know I must have spelled it wrong. Can anyone help?

Raeford TSC is definitely closer, only like 5 min from my house, but it's terrible!
I've never gone to sell, just always seem to be there getting feed since I run my errands Saturday morning.
There is next to no customers and always the same 4 vendors-- one selling eggs & crafts, one selling soap & bunnies, an the same 2 older guys every week one selling random livestock, and the other selling chickens in little battery cages with missing feathers, bleeding combs, sawed off spurs on the roosters.  I won't even let my kids go over by his birds anymore, I get too upset.  I know last Fall they kept having people called on them from reports of animal neglect & selling sick animals.  I think they just started up again for Spring.  I don't know if it's gotten better this Spring, but from the sounds of the Cedar Creek, it would be worth the hour drive to get there.

Spurs? Sounds horrible. :(

Mmmmm warm day today. Wanting to plant things so desperately but unsure if the warm weather will last beyond this week!!

Congratulations on all the big exciting life changes! :)

Quote: Not really. One could remove the spur's outer case to shorten the spur. You can also trim them so they don't have a sharp tip on them. Game cockers like to leave a stout base of natural spur to affix the blades to, so they keep the spurs trimmed down. If done right and often, the quick stay small and there is not a lot of blood loss if any.

Sounds like someone who runs the auctions, buying cheap birds to sell to people at flock swaps who don't know much about birds. Not that there is anything wrong with auction birds, just most (not all) of these people don't care too much about the person buying or birds they are selling and will lie to make a sale.

Dutch bunny what does the guy with battery cages look like?

I'm excited for Spring as well! I'm loving this warm weather. Picked me up a couple blueberry bushes & a raspberry today, headed out there now to find a spot for them.

RF- I know some people do it, I don't keep roosters, but my personal preference is to keep the animals natural I don't like beak dubbing or any of that type thing. I remember reading something that they're like a horn, so they can be cut (especially if they're overly long), though his were all the way down to the leg, I thought there was supposed to be a little something left, but I don't know. I definitely didn't like the huge bald spots & bloody combs. I know a lot of people just think of livestock as food (which they're that too), but I can't stand when people don't take care of their animals. But he definitely looks like one of those guys trying to scam people (which I myself fell for when I first started out). Anyway to answer your question he was an older guy, I'd guess in his 60s or so, medium height/weight, he always wears a flannel shirt, and he has some pretty wild white hair. He's got a beard and moustache too, but not real long. Drives a pick up and hauls all the cages on the back on a trailer. I don't know his name or anything.

No, removing spurs should be no big deal. I think she just couldn't remember the name of them. The *condition* of his birds sounds horrible. If my kids were around that, they'd ask him why..... Sorry to have been confusing. :D
