RF-   I know some people do it, I don't keep roosters, but my personal preference is to keep the animals natural I don't like beak dubbing or any of that type thing.  I remember reading something that they're like a horn, so they can be cut (especially if they're overly long), though his were all the way down to the leg, I thought there was supposed to be a little something left, but I don't know.  I definitely didn't like the huge bald spots & bloody combs.  I know a lot of people just think of livestock as food (which they're that too), but I can't stand when people don't take care of their animals.  But he definitely looks like one of those guys trying to scam people (which I myself fell for when I first started out).  Anyway to answer your question he was an older guy, I'd guess in his 60s or so, medium height/weight, he always wears a flannel shirt, and he has some pretty wild white hair.  He's got a beard and moustache too, but not real long.  Drives a pick up and hauls all the cages on the back on a trailer.  I don't know his name or anything.

Some of them get so long it actually impedes their walking. I'm all for natural, too, but when it causes problems or prevents function, I think it's ok to help (says she with hen saddles on the task list for tomorrow). They will grow back, so it's not permanent.

Although I don't usually trim beaks, I will if it tends to grow too
long or the beaks tends towards cross beak or the bird is a
feather picker or wants to fight the other birds too much. Then I
only blunt just the tip to limit the damage done to other birds.
I do keep spurs either blunt or I will shell them back if they tend
to grow too long. I do that so the rooster does not have problems
walking or roosting and if they do fight with another rooster,
neither one should lose an eye so easy. It also helps to ease the
scratches on the hen's backs. Just my 2 cents worth.

Good morning folks

It is sounding like Mother Nature is having a good time at
the bowling alley and knocking downs lots of pins. She
has also decided everything needed a good washing after
DOT had salted things last week. DH was grumbling about
the mud and while I'm not thrilled about it, I would rather
have the mud now than the drought later. I figure the garden
patch is getting a good soak before growing season starts.

Good morning!

Loving this warm weather, I want to spend the whole day in the garden, hoping the rain holds off.
That storm last night was crazy!
These ducks are loving the mud, I just washed them off yesterday too!
I called & cancelled this ridiculous order of 25 top hats DH made, so one less thing I'm going to have to deal with.
Now I owe my kids a top hat pullet......

Hope everyone has a great day!

Hi everyone! I have a question I was hoping someone could help me with. Here goes! last fall I went to the Chicken Stock swap meet in Lincolnton. While I was there I notice these great Green Wire cages that some vendors were displaying their chicken in. I asked about them then and someone mentioned a gamebird supply shop in Morganton (maybe?) I cant remember!! UGH! I even called this shop just after the show, but they had none at the time. Well l would like to call these folks again but can not for the life of me remember the name of this shop. I tried Google and yellow pages on line and can not find anything. I was hoping you guys, being the chicken experts you are, might be able to help me. Thanks in advance for any info. you can supply.

OMG! I was wondering how many people got woken by that thunder last night! So crazy how sudden it was! I guess we're close enough to spring that it will be the norm again soon!

Yeah I too am wanting to plant my garden. I may tomorrow if my clover seed arrives in the mail.
I saw a duck making a nest yesterday and got excited but then also got worried all my chickens will go broody now. ;)
