I've been fortunate enough to meet lots of honest and good people in the area from keeping chickens.
I had some extra birds I was selling, and this guy gave me this sob story on how he lost all his birds because his landlord made him homeless he's just starting over doesn't have a lot of money and wanted to buy my birds for his daughter so she can raise them and get eggs. So he shows up at my house with his daughter and I sell them at a loss trying to help the guy out. (Didn't let him in my yard or anything, but he came to my front porch to pick them up and now knows where I live)
He got 4 ten week old leghorns for $20 and 5 3 week old lavender silkies for $15. He now has them posted on craigslist as his own birds, $60 for the leghorns and $35 for the silkies. I mean if you want to take my birds and resell them, why would you have to lie to me to do it? I don't know why I'm so upset about it, it's not about the money, it's about feeling like I was lied to and taken advantage of when I was trying to be nice. And what's this teaching his daughter?
I found out who the guy was afterwards, had I known I never would have sold them to him in the first place. He's pretty sheisty apparently goes to the auctions and resells birds, apparently a lot of people have complained about his birds being sick. I guess he'll get what's coming to him. Just wanted to vent to someone...

Unfortunately there are a lot of shady chicken people that will take advantage of people. Seen it happen a lot at the flock swaps. Last time I seen a guy selling a bird as a dom pullet, but said bird was a orange barred bird with a single comb and a rooster. Doms are black barred like a barred rock and have a rose comb. Same man was also saying all the birds in one pen were older pullets except for the one hen that was laying eggs, most looked like young roosters that were more like 3 months old, and I was waiting for the egg laying hen in that pen to crow right in front of him.![]()
Not all people at flock swaps/ chicken places are out to cheat you. But this is why I always say to research what you want so you know how they should look as an egg, chick, teen, and adult. Nothing like paying high dollar for a rare Italian cinnamon queen, just to find out that its a hybrid layer sold at all hatcheries.
When I have a few birds to sell, I always tell people to feel free to ask questions, as I don't mind answering them so that they are better off and know about the birds. I also recommend asking questions if you are looking at getting a bird, even if you know the answer, as it could tell you a lot about the person selling the birds.
Have a great day everyone.
Excellent advice, of course. I am much more well informed now. The last time I saw this specific guy, he was selling orange barred chickens with single combs. So the question is, are there a lot of shady chicken people in fayetteville, or just one awful one in particular? I suspect it's the latter as most of the chicken folks that I have met in the area have been honest and outstanding people.Unfortunately there are a lot of shady chicken people that will take advantage of people.
