North Carolina

Had fun at the Greensboro show today. Caught up with some fellow Ameraucana Breeders Club members, and my son had his eyes opened to several new kinds of chickens. He had never seen a sebright before. Those were some of his faves.

Notice how he's wearing the shirt from the 5k we ran this morning... He placed third in the youth category, ran it in 24:20. Pretty dang proud of him! :)

Has anyone ever sent a fowl in for necropsy? If so where/who did you use and can you remember the cost associated with it?

We have lost 2 ducks in a month and a half. Both were approx 3 years old. The first one was showed no signs of illness. One morning I let everyone out and she didn't come out. She was huddled in a corner making no attempts to leave. I took her inside ran her a warm bath thinking she was having a hard time passing an egg (which she had never had problems with before). I put her in and was holding her in my hand and she passed. Tonight our second one passed. This one lived inside as she had always been unsteady on her feet. She was a crested and had balance issues from day one. She was given brewers yeast and calcium supplements daily in her feed. She started losing her feathers around monday, like she was going through a hard molt. She was active and begging for treats, today she could hardly hold her head up to eat. I gave her anything I could think of to help. She loved canned cat food and it had always helped keep meat on her bones, she ate a few green beans this morning and by evening she refused all food. I gave her pedialyte, tried ensure, and probiotic yogurt. As a last ditch effort I got activated charcoal to try but she passed before I got back with it.
Any clues as to what is going on? We have tested our water so we know there is nothing in it. I am at a loss.

Why can't people swim or even wade in that big lake?
Scott

It's supposed to be a drinking water lake... People can't go in the water, but motorboats can spew their oily mess all over it. Makes tons of sense.

The fishing isn't even that great either, at least in our experience.

In other news, today was hatch day again! One looks to be a Silkie/Faverolles cross and the other a full Silkie so far!

What kind of spider is this? No red on the belly. Just the back. I'm pretty sure it is a black widow but I just wana make sure. I freaking walked right through her web on my front porch. I almost peed my pants when I saw it! I am TERRIFIED of spiders. Had to wake DH up to kill it. Now he's upset he killed it. I'm like its a freaking highly venomous spider for Gods sake!!!!

I'd say a young-ish Black Widow. We had T O N S of them around my house when we first moved in. Having pets and small children around, I did NOT tolerate them at all... so after regular squash-patrol, their numbers around my house are much lower.
Their webs aren't nicely shaped. They're tangled wads and are usually under things/in dark, secluded places. They also like to stay hidden during daytime.

Rollins Diagnostic up near the vet school. State testing facility. Cost is minimal. $30 covered six birds IIRC. Your vet will be familiar with them and can put you in touch.
With the Avian Influenza outbreak and waterfowl being the the prime carriers, getting tested would not be a bad move.
