I'm going to say the baby made me do it?!?

So I have a few funny things to share with you all this morning. First off...I have created an egg SNOB!! My chickens are on a laying strike (or more probable are laying in the woods) and so I have only been getting about 2 eggs a day. Well I don't have any today so I fixed DD some organic eggs from the grocery store...she literally TURNED HER NOSE up at them!!
lau.gif
Who knew that she would know the difference (although I will say for organic "free ranged" eggs...their yolks were NOT as orange as mine are...and mine only free range for 1/2 the day!!). Secondly, not only do my Marans lay the BIGGEST eggs out of the bunch, but their shells are seriously the toughest of the lot!! Compared to my orpingtons, the marans' eggs can be dropped on the floor (5 second rule, right??) and not even crack!! Someday when we get a few more, I may have to get a Maran Roo so I can keep the Marans going!!
big_smile.png
Personality wise...my Orps take the cake!! Anyone know what an Orp/Maran cross would look like?? Or better yet, an Orp/Maran/EE cross (if the "mutt" ever went broody)?? Just curious as to what "mutant" crosses may look like!!
lau.gif
Aside from working here and there without power because of the rain...I have no more funny news for you!!

JL - Thank you for the heads up on the Tylenol PM!! Now if I can only find one that is similar yet NOT Tylenol (which I am allergic to - go figure!!). All the tea does is make me have to potty more often!! As if THAT is needed!! I am thankful I am only dealing with one...more power to you for twins - wow!!
fl.gif
keeping my fingers crossed twins don't come my way (even though we have a family history of twins on my maternal side!!)
hugs.gif
Hope you are feeling better!!
clap.gif
YAY for the uber mean sub!!

HT - I agree with SCM....you need to come up with a LF Silkie...I'd be in line for one of those...then again, I'm already in line for one of your English Orps....because they are SO CUTE and cuddly and fluffy!! Sorry...got lost in the chicken moment!! As for your sweet pair...I think it has a lot to do with their adoptive mother making them so friendly and approachable!!
big_smile.png

Oh yes, those organic/free range store eggs are not even CLOSE to the same as what yours actually do!

These birds are 'offered' access to the outside to free range in a grassy area they never actually touch. They don't show the birds the way out... the birds would have to figure it out on their own. Usually its a doggy door in some place or another. The only thing they get that's organic is their feed. So they still don't really get to eat bugs or grass like yours do.

The taste of our birds eggs is still AMAZING to me. I'm still in shock I went my whole life without such a simple experience and pleasure.... real, fresh, eggs!

NewHomesteader, I just remembered that when I was pregnant and had trouble sleeping, my Brazilian mother in law (who is full of home remedies) used to give me Passion fruit juice and it helped alot. It used to be difficult to find, but now I see in the regular grocery stores near the orange juice and still drink it to relax. When I want to relax alot, I mix it with rum.

A wet but good morning to you all.............

Ally, welcome and sorry to hear about your recent purchases/losses. I have also attended a sales but before I would even consider buying any birds I look at the crates they are being kept in, the person selling and the vehicle they drive and generally they way they care for the birds. This may take me a while but I have to be 100% happy. When I attended one as a seller, I had my birds in a drop cage, straw on the floor and water/food for them as well as a cover to give them some shade. Needless to say I had no birds come home with me...........

NH - Ruthann, my Orps are laying daily, getting double yolkers - are you sure you're not "spoiling them" too much...... someone told me that if production is down try crushed chilli peppers in their feed, I have tried it and it seems to work........

Am so looking forward to 10/29 and my first showing of a bird. I will also be delivering 2 Buff Orp roos to 2 lucky people (they know who they are). This will allow me to make room for expansion of my laying flock. Lookingat either Light Sussex, Coronation Sussex or some more Buff Orps......

All of my silkie chicks are growing fast. I didn't expect to have over 15 chicks in brooder boxes this time of year, but as we all know incubating is addictive!! I just wish it was possible to sex silkies at birh!!!

I'm dreaming of a GQF Sportman with digital thermostat........

Eggs - there is no comparison to store bought andd home produced eggs!!

Oh I know how addictive they are, lol I have 13 just from her now...Luckily, all I usually have to do is tell Hunter I'm going to Tricia's and he is ok with it. He did tell me we need to finish our coop first, but he might not notice the little serama pair, especially since they are as friendly and sweet as the pair I just got from her
love.gif

Off to work I go
sad.png
atleast it is raining so I won't be missing too much around the farm

This pair is just as sweet as yours.
love.gif
I don't know how that even happen because the parent stock hates to be touched.
hmm.png
These little ones come to the cage door and wait for you to open it so they can perch and have their tummy rubbed and talk to you.

tricia,

do you have a name/number of the feed saleman that was at the chickenstock.... I want to see if he'll be at the show this month as I want to buy some feed.....

Now a word from the DW - Allison here .

Gavin ,

no more chickens remember - we have maxed out on chickens ... ( unless of course Sandy has some silkies .. ) LOL

Sportman -- ARE you crazy , you having one of them is like a crack head working at the CVS - OH MY Goodness I can see the house now , brooder boxes everywhere , pine shaving dust covering everything ---- Dear Lord don't allow Santa to bring him one of these Sportsman things.

Eggs- My egg customers love love love my ladies's eggs - they all tell me what a difference the eggs are compaired to store bought... one lady said her husband will not eat any eggs but mine. Problem I have is - are you ready for this --- I CAN NOT EAT EGGS at all since I started raising chickens . Yes it is true - I was always a egg eater until I watched too many hatch etc... I gag upon the sight of them.

I know it is crazy - but true. Allison can not eat a egg.

I am going to go outside later on and try this!! I cannot say for sure if I am "spoiling them" TOO much - how does one define too much??
lau.gif
When does production for you slow down - or does it?? If it doesn't, how do you keep it up and running? Do you have heat lamps and lights out there for them? If so, that is out for us...there's no electricity in the barn - although if I let DH build his garage, I'd have the electricians run electricity out to the barn then....but that's a LONG time from now. I have to get through all the babies...anyway, I think they might be laying in the woods when I let them out. I have been battling with myself because they are SO happy foraging in the grass (their pen is VOID of grass) and they immediately come running whenever I go outside - I haven't even had to buy mealworms to treat them!! I'm still nervous about them getting hurt or taken by a predator...I keep seeing BIG shadows - only to run outside and see that it is a crow!!
gig.gif
So then I go back and debate with myself...do I let them out or don't I. Suggestions?? Advice??
I think we need photos of the breeds you are considering adding to your flock, so those of us who might want some in the future can decide!!
lau.gif
GOOD LUCK
fl.gif
for your showing...I hope we will get to see LOTS of photos!!
big_smile.png

Side note to Allison - I haven't eaten eggs since being pregnant with the FIRST child...the mere smell of eggs has me gagging (I blamed it at first on being pregnant...now I think I have just associated chicks with the eggs!! So I do understand!!). Just cooking them up for DD and DH sends me reeling...I've had to learn to breathe through my mouth while turned away from the stove!!
lau.gif
(I still have eggs IN things though...like CAKE!!) Just wanted you to know you're not "alone" out there!!
big_smile.png

Oh, and Ally -
lau.gif
Figures I would read your suggestion AFTER I get back from the store. When I am out and about tomorrow I am definitely going to pick some up and try it!! Thank you SO much for the suggestion!! I am all about natural remedies....I wonder how it would compare to eating the fruit rather than drinking the juice (since most juice has TONS of added sugars...hmmm. Will need to look into this!!
big_smile.png
). As for a due date - 4/9/12 is my "tentative" date, although I am thinking he/she will probably arrive closer to the 19th since I am NEVER on time!!
lau.gif
(that and DD was 5 days late, so I'm guessing #2 mystery baby will be 10 days late!!
lau.gif
) Thanks again!!

On a side note...I apparently really like the "

" emoticon!! hehe.
