Ok another dumb question time....

I have been reading Dog killed my chickens, I killed the dog Thread ( https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/531652/dog-killed-my-chickens-i-killed-the-dog/250 ) and wonder if anyone knows, (DUH), what the law in NC is???

Can I kill an animal that threatens my animals??? Are they considered livestock?

Do I have to call Animal control or the sheriff or is SSS the best way to go???.

I have protected my animals before but after reading that thread thought I should ask how it works in NC.

I would call animal control tomorrow. Think it may vary by county.

Here in Cumberland County in the rural areas you are allowed to kill
dogs/cats that are killing your stock on your property but I don't know
about other counties. It would be best to ask your local county sheriff
and/or animal control office.......the laws may be different for your area.

I know chicks can go in boxes, but not sure about standard????

I have heard that WCA does not allow adult birds in boxes but
I do see them being sold in boxes so not sure what WCA will
allow but they will sell you one of those wooden crates.

@ tick22, I've always been told that as long as the dog dies on YOUR property, there is nothing that can be done to you. If it goes home, you CAN be held responsible for any vet bills that are a result of your injuring the dog. So that sort of sends the message, "Shoot to kill, not to wound." BTW: Heard that from an officer when we asked about what we could do about other problem animals that would come to our house.

Since I can't bring myself to kill a dog......unless it comes at me, and then even then its a big if..... I work with my local animal control officer to trap nuisance dogs. Last year I had an issue with my neighbors hound dogs attacking and destroying my property, so animal control came out and trapped them and since no of them had tags, they were taken to the shelter and that meant if the neighbor wanted them back he had to pay a fine for each dog. Most counties, if you are outside the city limits, allow you to protect your livestock, by any means necessary.
