North Carolina

Question: Since the chicks are in a brooder, the food and water are in there with them. They eat on and off all day and evening. When they finally go out to the coop I don't know what to do about the food and water. When I look at the coop designs on the BYC site, a lot of them seem to have the food/water inside. Was thinking of putting them outside in the run since it will be covered with a roof. Should I re-think that idea and find a way to put them in the 4' X 6' coop (have 6 easter egger chicks)

Hi everyone ... Hope everyone had a good day ... No rain today and just a little sunshine here ... Still a little mud out in the chicken/goat pens though ...
Posted a picture of the tiny, tiny little Serama I had to peel out of the shell ... It made a tiny little hole and couldn't get out of the hard shell two nights ago ... The chick was so dry, and everything was stuck to it ! It's amazing it's still here. Now it's already drinking water and pecking at food ... Thank you Beth for the eggs !

Luke..Sorry about your hen.

NH... The ducks breed mostly in the water. And your hens can & will lay this year. They WILL hide the nest...They like small dark places. You will need to stalk them.

Okay, Folks. I have a "Save The Date" thingy here, for those that can. Friday, March 22. I know many of us work on Friday, and can't take off, but if you can and are close enough, you may want to attend part or all of this.

Since we have a new Sustainable Agriculture track to our BS in Biology degree at UNC Pembroke, a small one day conference has been put together to raise interest. It's free to attend. There will be a supplied Local Foods lunch by a chef. It's subsidized, so costs only $5/person, and you do have to register in advance for that. The keynote speaker is Charlie Jackson, director and one of the founders of the Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project. Then there are two class sessions in the morning, each 50 minutes long, and one two-hour workshop time in the afternoon. You have to choose between three possible subjects in each time period.

First session, the choices are:
The Conservation Fund. Funding for sustainable projects
Creative ways in which North Carolinians are building community food systems...CEFS
Backyard Chickens...by the Poultry extension agent

Second session in the morning:
GAP certification
Local Food Councils...CEFS
Aquaponics

Afternoon workshops:
Marketing strategies for agriculture
Vermicomposting
Growing mushrooms for fun and profit

My colleague will provide me with a proper flyer which I can email to whomever might be interested in going. This is at ComTech, rather than on our campus proper. It's easy to get to off I-95. I don't teach on Friday, so will plan on being there. My husband is planning on arranging his work schedule so he can go too.

If you want a flyer as soon as I have them, drop me a pm with an email addy to send it to.

Well I might be losing a Cornish X tonight. One sneaked out of coop today and hid underneath the coop, which on one end about 1 ft and 1/2 off the ground and the other is almost touching the ground. He is hid back under the low end and I cannot get to him. So if he survives the cold hopefully nothing will eat him. He is only 4 weeks old.... I am kind of sad!

You people out West have all the fun.
Just wanted to let everyone know that I just had 7 muscovy ducklings hatch. Some are black pied and some are white. I will probably have some pairs to sell in a couple of months if anyone is interested. I'm thinking I will probably bring them to the Carolina Chicken Swap.
