North Carolina

just seen an ad on Craig's list

you can rent two prize winning hens, coop and food to be provided for two weeks all for just $100 plus $50 refundable deposit. You'll see if you want to raise chickens or not with out the $500 to $1000 start up cost, plus you'll get free eggs about one per hen each day. If you like after the two weeks we can get you started

anyone who does this will probably not get any eggs, because of the hens being moved so much I just don't know
I remember my grandad quoiting P. T. Barnam saying "A sucker is born every minute" Every time I thought that I heard about a (too good to be true) deal.

Good Morning, Happy Chicken People!

Like probably most of you, I both laughed and shook my head about the CL ad to rent chickens. But I've been thinking about it, and I've revised my opinion.

I have two sisters who somehow turned out to be "city people", despite being country raised. If my older sister ever thought abought chickens, she would answer an ad like that. She'd want a test before she jumped in. Heck, when she deciced she wanted a garden, she paid someone to come set it up, so all she's had to do is weed and harvest! So there are people out there who would benefit from this. Now, I agree that the likelihood of the chickens going off lay is a problem, so I think renting them for a month would be better. But really, if there are people out there like my sister, then this is simply capitalism at work.

My sister has taught me a lot about what people will pay for! And, of course, then go pay more for a gym membership!

At any rate, it made me think differently about the whole thing.

Enjoy your day, everyone!

They are two different animals. It's the problem with common names. The gypsy moths are Lymantria dispar species, with lots of subspecies. The Tent caterpillars are Malacosoma americanum. Here's a link showing the difference between the two species: http://www.woodacrestree.com/blog/tent-caterpillar-or-gypsy-moth.html

I think I'll add these to my list of reasons I give my students why we should not use common names. Of course, we all use common names and we aren't going to stop, but scientifically speaking we shouldn't.

No rain on us yet. Need more diapers!

So I had my diapers out on the line ALL day...about 3:00 I was on the phone with my mother and hung up on her (accidentally) because I had just noticed it was RAINING. LOL, the diapers were just as wet ~6 hours after I had hung them up.

So much for sunny and 60!! LOL. DH said it happens every time, I just jinx myself. Now I need to figure out a way to harvest the sun's "bleaching" power while hanging my diapers up on the screened in porch! LOL.
Thanks for the clarification!! Like I said, my mother use to call them that when we lived in CT and being the "good" child that I was I <ahem> NEVER questioned her!!

LOL. Okay, at least in this area, I never questioned. LOL I think one day, I need to take your class...maybe I can be convinced Science isn't really all that bad. Haha.

Sadly, I have been feeling very "achy" lately... DH is wondering if it's Braxton Hix Contractions, but I think it's a little early for those. 18 more weeks to go (that translates to 18 more weeks until SUMMER too)...Today we have decided to be "lazy" and just rest up. I'll do minimal work - laundry (never ending) and I have some pumpkin muffins calling my name to bake, so I'll put DD to work and get busy doing a little baking.

Lock up countdown: Chickens have been locked up since Friday and STILL not one egg. I'm going to die when we go to clean out the coop this weekend and find 50 bazillion eggs buried in the shavings!!

good day all

Good morning all! The chicks are getting bigger every day. Doing very well out in the garage. I put some sand in under the shavings and they don't seem to be digging it out all over the place like before. Think they just have more room so it's not a big problem.
Have a good day.

I already bought the 1602.....It's running great, steady at 99.7 with 51 humidity. Was just wondering if there's any tips or tricks I need to know about.

Good morning, everybody!

Is it WINDY where you are??! It's gusting terribly here. I am not letting the girls out, I'm afraid they might blow away!! But I woke up with the feeling that this is blowing in SPRING! I feel like it's just waiting there underneath it all, and we are getting ready to see it pop out all over very soon. I can't wait!

My seedlings are doing well and I'm patiently waiting for my DH to have time to get my great big grow light hung up in the garage so I can start more. I have run out of room under the small ones.

My hens have been laying 100% the last three days. Love those girls.

Woke up to three new little SFH babies in the incubator. None of the Maran eggs have pipped, just my little early-birds. Excited to hatch Marans, I never have.

Anyone interested in four beautiful little Black Australorp chicks, a week old? My gift to any BYC-er!

Have a wonderful day, everybody. I'm off to find a temporary brooder so I don't put the little babies in with the big babies yet.

What's that quote? March comes in like a lion and out like a lamb? Yes, it's wonderfully windy out there! Blowing in Spring!
