North Carolina

Bought my 2nd bag of feed today. My girls are about 9 weeks old so I got the starter/grower feed. Since I will be trying to permanently transfer them to the coop this week, I also got some Sweet PDZ for the poop boards in the coop. Wanted to get a hanging water container, but the TSC was out.

TSC in Lenoir, NC still has some chicks. One was being doctored as it had been butt pecked

I will say the idea to smash it was TOP on my list of things to do/how to respond...but then I kept having flash backs to the movie Arachnophobia where the spider JUMPS on the guy's face...so I just couldn't stomach that thought - it about sent me into early labor

JK, well kind of. Spiders terrify me, but I am trying to be a good mama and react LESS so that I don't pass my "issues" on to the ever watchful eyes of my youngsters. They are growing up country while I grew up a city girl with dreams of being a country bumpkin. LOL.

Collected SIX eggs today (DH forgot to collect last night and I was NOT about to go in there...in the dark...with that monster of a spider lurking about) and still NO duck eggs. What could be up? They have their favorite spots and I have checked them all, they don't wander far from the deck, so I am just completely confused as to why they aren't laying.

I think I may be jinxed...my guineas never laid me any eggs, my ducks LOVE to eat from my hand and will let me pet them but don't give me eggs and I had to FIGHT with my chickens to start laying...not to mention when they go broody and hatch eggs - I hatch ROOSTERS 99% of the time!!

If they weren't so cute, and weren't a necessity, I'd contemplate giving up!! To console myself, I think I am going to go look at photos of chicks and ducklings!!

I have tons of duck eggs if you want some. I can't eat them, and hubby and kids don't eat a lot of them, so I'm having to get rid of my surplus. Maybe if you tell the ducks you'll get duck eggs elsewhere they'll get jealous and start laying!

I am SURE those ducks are laying. Mine are, Alex's are and they are all the same age. They are just hiding them from you.

Well, I guess I am no longer raising standard cochins. As I was closing up we found BigBoy dead. He was fine just after 6pm when I fed everyone supper. He was walking up through the yard to see what Ruby was fussing about. At 7:15 he was just laying in the grass dead. He was limber and warm. He had no marks and absolutely no feathers missing.

I have no way to replace him. I guarentee there isn't a LF Cochin rooster in NC, VA, SC, or TN even near the quality he was.

He has only had a little time around the 4 standard cochin hens on a few days here and there and I hadn't trimmed any butts yet. Two of the ladies are laying, but I really doupt any are fertile. I am not even going to try incubating them.

Quote: C S B's are also laying ( what do you with a double or tripple yolked duck egg?) That hen is real good at pulling grass/straw or what ever over the egg, has even went so far as to dig about a 3' hole and pull straw over it!

Now when I feed them I have to look for any moved about dirt/grass/straw, That duck will NOT lay in the same spot 2 times in a row
