I looked all day yesterday for a vet because my whole flock seems to have gotten corsyx from some auction birds I bought home without any luck.
I was suggested the vet schools. If you go back a couple pages it has the exact name.
Fortunately, my husband is in the military and the unit's vet grew up on a farm so she was a lot of help (hopefully!)
I hope things get better!

Thanks. I called Seventy First Animal Hospital on Raeford Rd this morning. They said they could look at her. But WOW, the office visit is around 100, x-rays ~100 (of course) and blood work ~100. Lord knows I love my Cait but I can not see spending 300+. So we will give her a few more weeks to get well. If she starts to go downhill then we will have to cull her. As long as she stays healthy, walking normal or no, we will keep her.
So, if anyone else needs a vet at some point give them a call, at least they are local.

Does anyone have advice for a waterer? I know with the hot summer months upon us, I am looking for a better way to water my girls. With just the waterer that we currently have (which was purchased for temporary use, there is sometimes some slime {that I always clean off} build up when I go to fill it. It may hold a pint of water - that isn't enough.


So - what would you recommend?

I use old milk or vinegar jugs. Cut the handle near the base so you can slip it over the wire to hold it in place. Than cut a hole, about half way up from the bottom and up to the slop of the top, in the front. When it gets to were it doesn't clean easy or brakes, throw away. I can just spin it upside down to rinse clean (don't have to remove from wire) and in winter when there's ice I can brake the ice with a hammer and if the jug brakes, replace with a new one. Have a few in each pen

Can I see a picture? I want something that is low(er) maintenance (than perhaps cleaning out a waterer every week). Our family lives out of state, and I am looking for something that may be a little more less maintenance (for our neighbor) if we go out of town this summer. I have seen the 5 gallon bucket/pvc/chicken nipples, but the one that I saw was pretty complex, there has to be something easier. Thanks for all of your help

Sure I will take a pic after work for you! It wasn't much work at all to set up and it is wonderful!! The bucket is on the outside of my fence so we can fill it from the outside and I painted the bucket black to cut down on algae growing. Would have just bought a black bucket had I realized that before... And ACV helps keep the algae down too. This winter I'm going to experiment with a bird bath defroster to keep it from freezing also

Good afternoon everyone!

Nothing major to report on the Meadows front!! Chicks are doing well, mama is doing an amazing job at being a mama and I hope in the near future to have a little portable pen to allow them to "free range" a bit more than what they are doing at the moment (which is nothing but staying with mama locked up in the quarantine/broody pen).
I have one duck that is constantly laying her egg inside my well cover, 2 other ducks laying...somewhere?!? Funniest news of all...turns out that DH can't eat duck eggs. They make him violently ill. I made him a quiche from duck eggs and he ended up thinking he had the stomach flu...stopped eating the quiche, got better...ate the quiche - symptoms returned!! FINALLY something he's unable to eat...you know, so I'm not the one getting blamed for ALL the food issues in this house!! LOL
Yesterday I collected an olive egg which I haven't collected in AGES so I am thinking my girls are off laying elsewhere too. I'm tempted to keep them under lock and key, but also afraid because last time I locked them up for a day, we had a mysterious duck death...I don't want to risk it!! Suggestions (aside from stalking them...that doesn't work with 2 youngsters AND about to pop) on how to find where they are nesting? I know it's in the woods surrounding us, I just don't know in which direction, or where?!? LOL...who wants to bring their kids over for a duck & chicken egg hunt?!? I'll make cake...or cookies...OR cake AND cookies?!? LOL

Today is almost over and with it brings tomorrow which is FRIDAY and then the weekend. I hope everyone has a great afternoon!

Good evening, all! Anyone else have some seriously crazy chickens today? Maybe because it was hot all day, and there is a possibility of rain? My oh my! They just about ate my whole hand off trying to get to the mealworms. Nevermind strpping all over one another and sqwaking! Feisty little hennies!
