Does anyone garden? {Yes, I know this is a forum about chickens -- But I think y'all are smart} I have a major issue with slugs. I hate them. HATE THEM. Like skin crawling, screeching in fear, HATE THEM. I was picking some lettuce yesterday, and found one while I was outside in the garden. I carried the lettuce to the house to wash it and as it was soaking, there was ANOTHER mother blessin' slug IN MY SINK! I could handle a spider...but a slug? NO WAY! I got online to read about it and it said to spread coffee grounds and crushed egg shells -- but I am not sure if there is enough coffee in this world... I don't want to attract them in, I want to kill them off. HELP!!!

I remember that my dad would put beer in a lid and set that in the garden. They would go into it and that would be the end of them. I haven't tried it myself, I've never had a slug problem. It would be a cheap solution.

Beer traps do work. My hubby would call that alcohol abuse, though!

LOL...for those of you wanting a play by play description of the life-altering "vacation" with my nieces and nephew here, I am sorry to disappoint you. I have just learned that they threw such a fit over having to come here where it's "boring, there's NOTHING to do AND she makes us work!" that my sister is apparently going to take them to Florida instead.

I shall firmly apply the duct tape over my mouth so I don't risk saying anything mean/hateful or anything else...PLEASE feel free to rant/rave FOR me!!

I will only say I am NOT ashamed for teaching my children how to work, the value of hard work, how NOTHING in life is free and if you want to eat/have a place to live/nice things you MUST work to pay for those things. If that makes me mean or boring or what not, so be it, I LOVE my life and wouldn't trade it for anything...THEY are the ones missing out...not us!! <end of G rated rant...sorry>

Luke - I am sure the GF is miserable...this weather has been SO unforgiving for those of us expecting!! She's probably also a bit anxious to meet the little fellow too!! I had a wise woman tell me once, "no woman has ever been pregnant for life" - that was her answer to me being anxious!! LOL...I will say two weeks later, I saw in the news of a woman who was "pregnant" for 40 years because the baby fused to her in some rare medical mystery and she finally at age 60 or something had what she thought was a tumor removed and come to find out it was a baby that had fused to her...anyway, because of that, I'd recommend NOT saying the whole pregnancy can't last forever bit...LOL

We're praying all goes well and in the right time!!

NH, I have to agree with all of the others. My sister informed me that her children were afraid of my husband because he made them do things, like pick up after themselves, and that I was mean because I 'made' my children do chores...laundry, cooking, cleaning etc. I told my children that I would be doing them and their future spouses a terrible disservice if I turned them out in the world unable to care for themselves. I love my sister, but her kids are lazy, living off of my poor disabled mother, having babies that are paid for by our tax dollars.
Off that stump.

Luke the baby will come when it comes. It always seems forever, but my doctor said when the fruit is ripe it will drop. Don't rush it, tempting as it may be, delivery is easier if it happens on it's own. Baby and mom will be healthier and recovery for mom will be faster.

Boy I want to launch a HUGE complaint, I had chores to do! Getting paid for them

, no way in H*ll! I had to scoop poop (horse poop as cat poop was a chore) or pull weeds (penny for everyone with a root piece) for money. When I wanted my second earring hole I had to mow our yard and the neighbors next door for the whole summer. NH, I just can't see how they are living on a working farm, but not helping.

I hated mowing yards, but if I wanted money that was one way I got it. I have probably mowed every yard in this neighborhood sometime in my lifetime. I even pulled poison Ivy/oak for neighbors, since I am not allergic to it. I never once got an allowance. We never had alot, but we had what we needed. No payment for doing chores, but miss them and it was an asswhooping from Dad. I didn't sit and watch TV all day, heck we only had 4 channels and you had to go out and turn the antenna pole to get the 4th one.

I spent half my free time in a creek or the woods, at least till dark.

One rabbit, stuffed with apples, draped in bacon and drizzled with Vermont maple syrup, in the oven. Hubby picked peas when he got home, so they're shelled and ready to steam. Sourdough biscuits on standby. As soon as the rabbit is done, I'll get the oven hot for them.

I love it when we raised part of dinner. Some meals have been all home- raised, but we don't raise pigs or grain. Or live in Vermont!

Dinner will be good just the same!

We didn't do allowances either, we heard a speaker once talk about how giving kids money for doing what they should do was encouraging a welfare mentality. My kids picked strawberries for the local farms and mowed and weeded the church flower beds and whatever else they could beg people into letting them do. They were quite enterprising.
