Today just plain flat out sucks

went outside to tend to all my birds, and found that one of my cochin roosters, is staggering like a drunk, his come is dark, like a bruise, and he is all fluffed up with a droopy tail

any ideas what could be wrong, or how to treat him? This little guy is my favorite, and I so don't want to lose him. I gave him a scrambled egg with nutridrench, and then continued about chores, as I came to the rabbit pens, I found my favorite, California doe, dead

she was pregnant and due in roughly 11 days

she had no wounds, plenty of fresh water and food, she was around 3 Years old. I'm so sad, I was really attached to her. today is not gonna be a good day.

Been on line looking for a reason...
I bought about 60 chicks from a large hatchery, for myself and a few friends last fall, I just did my first test-hatch from these birds, and they are all looking great, but this morning I noticed one in the bator that looked like it was trembling. Temp is good, and moisture is coming down from where it is normally kept for chick rotation to hatch.

What could have been past down 2 generations to this chick?

I have not removed it from the bator as of yet. Any ideas before evening would be great, so I know if this is just an underdeveloped fluke, or a real problem. I know that everyone has an opinion, but I also know that there are those on here that have been raising chicks for a long time. The birds from fall were all vaccinated for Merrick's, and I did worm them all before they started laying, as I had a case of gape worm in this flock. They are now getting treated for round worm, because I had 2 cases of eye worm, and though the young poult appears well, the young cock, is kicking just fine, but his eye is still inflamed. DS-1 holds him upside down for me to clean the area well, and I do expect he will do well in a few more days. I was having some physical difficulty, and I know DS-1 tries to help, but he did not notice for a few of those rainy days that the young cock was hiding in the hen house (not normal behavior). He will mend with time.

I am concerned for the odd chick that hatched over night!
Thank you, if anyone has a good idea of how to figure out what I am looking at here.

These dern animals are like our children! In fact, they ARE my children because I don't have any of the human kind...yet

Kind of a hot one out there today. My girls like to take refuge out under the grapevines. We have plenty of water out for them, I just hope they are smart enough to drink what they need! We took some cute videos yesterday of them eating noodles, they are too cute. It's literally like chicken crack! They go bananas over it!

Sorry Wild.... I wonder if it is heat stroke. ??? Put some frozen water bottles in the rabbit cages..


Chasity... Wormer should not affect incubation & Mereks is not transmittable through the egg (to my knowledge) I would chalk it up to a fluke...unless more show up with the same issue.

Thanks Beth, If anyone knows of anything else I should be looking for, please let me know. I will wait as long as I can before putting this one in with the others in the brooder, under the lamp.

I have chicks from Beth's Silkies in the brooder from this hatch as well, as others that I don't want to loose. I also don't like to put one chick alone. I think the chances of longevity go down.

I have waited so long to get and raise new Plymouth Rocks, and these were from the Bared ones. I would hate to have something crazy go on with them. After practically starting over after last spring's (coyote situation).

Ramirez: The male Sumatra that we got from you is looking as beautiful as ever, and we have had a few babies from the pair. They did not stay in the tree house that we made them. I guess they finally took to the hen house, so I put them in a tractor together this spring, under a big tree. The tree house did not go to waste though, a pair of old English Bantams has taken to it, and she has a clutch of eggs in it, and has gone broody. I guess I need to get up there within the week and candle them to see if she is ready to go into a lower nest for hatching or not.

Our newest addition is a Partridge Silkie from Mt Olive, named Tiger. I don't think he is going to like hanging out up by the house for the next few weeks while hearing all the others out of sight, but we do what we must. It was the only place out of the sun, and away from all others. So what's a momma to do?

On another note, we have lots of mice being born; more than the snake will eat.
