How old are they when they start to molt? Do they usually molt in the fall only? Or anytime during the year?

From what I understand, they are around 18 mos old when they start to molt. I've got some of my girls from last year molting now and they are not laying. I guess their bodies are working on feathers now instead of eggs.

For everyone with moulting questions, if you go into the top search line, and type moulting, there are 37 articles and many threads on moulting.

For what it is worth, many folks here have mentioned their birds are already moulting. This is very early, but it has been a weird summer!

I need some help from you folks who do the project breeding/experimenting A friend of mine decided to try to hatch some of the eggs I gave her. This little cutie hatched out and I am trying to figure out who the daddy might be. I'm guessing, with the 5 toes, that one of my silkie hens is the mama. Here are the options for a daddy.....

Any ideas??? I'm guessing it is Elvis, but that is just from the coloring in the feathers that are starting to come in.... This thing has dark skin - kind of greenish legs/beak. The toes really freak me out...they just look so weird. Its legs are feathered and it is extremely friendly and always wants to be held. I am pet sitting for it while my friend is out of state. It is around 10-12 days old, I think.

Oh, I should have mentioned that the 3 silkie hens are all black. Well, technically, they are black (splash parents), blue wheaten, and blue. They look black to me.

Birds can live long happy lives with just one eye. Caramel lost her right eye on Jan 3, 2009 at 3 years old. She was almost killed by a hawk. This is how she looked after a week of TLC.

She had a skull fracture behind her comb where the hawk was trying to pierce her skull for the kill shot. Took 2-3 weeks for the brain swelling to go down and her Left eye to no longer be fully dilated. After that she learned very quickly how to aim and eat again with just one eye.

It took about 3 months before she was able to go out permanently. The mental issues took longest to get over. She still gets overwhelmed at times and retires to a henhouse to take a nap. The good thing about her being hurt is that she went from wild and untouchable to a hand fed and friendly pet.

This is her a couple weeks ago. She is now 7 years old. You can see how far her face sunk in with the deflated eye.
