North Carolina

Fireantz Iceman.......you got some pretty birds and if you
are happy with them, then they are perfect for you......good trade

DST...........the problems with selling meat is you will have
to go through lots of regulations and if I remember right
you will have to be FDA inspected which leaves you selling
live birds for meat and most folks are not going to want to
process their own meat so now you have a limited market and
many of those folks willing to process also raise their own........
so really no money to be made unless you go big on amount
of birds and get all the permits and inspections.......like the BIG
commercial processors. Ramirezframing is right......get dual
purpose breed and sell off the extras as young birds or chicks.
Sell eggs as you have them for hatching or eating.....good luck.

Thank you for the advice! I think I have literally been researching about this alllllllllll day. Literally in every spare moment I had I was on google typing away. I think I have figured out all of the regulations and stuff and they really are not as confusing as I thought.

This is the PDF that explains how I can be exempted from needing to be inspected and all of that other painful inspections:

http://www.ncagr.gov/meatpoultry/notices/14-12 Poultry Exemption Requirements.pdf

According to this I can be exempted from inspections as long as I:
  • slaughter no more than 1,000 healthy birds a year
  • sell slaughtered birds only that I have raised
  • I slaughter the birds in humane and sound methods
  • keep records of slaughtering and of who birds are sold to
  • I sell within north carolina state lines

According to what I have read I am allowed to sell processed/slaughtered birds to anyone within North Carolina as long as I sell only birds I have raised and keep records of my sales.

I don't think it is possible to explain how accomplished I feel about myself for figuring this out. Don't get me wrong I am still going to use dual-purpose birds for eggs and use any excess roosters for meat and sell chicks. You all have been sooooooo helpful with helping me figure this out and compromise.

I hope the pdf I found is able to help out anyone else that is interested in selling meat birds too.

Thanks to everyone!

I don't like to be a rain on your day guy but, will your house insurance cover any "OH SH*TS" that might happen if somebody says 'I' got sick eating your meat? Meat that walks and talks is totally different then meat that you cleaned and sold as safe to eat!
Just thinking, Good luck !!

This is a really good point. We're looking at forming an LLC to sell our soaps/lotions/other stuff because of the liability issue. Even if they don't have a case, you'll still have the expense of the process, and that's not cheap.

Someone else told me the same thing about eggs, even if you give them away, does anyone know if that's true?
I used to give my neighbors around me fresh eggs all the time.
Another chicken person told me even if I give them away, have no idea how they store them or cook them, then if they claim to have gotten sick from the eggs they could sue me.
Which seemed a little far fetched, but who knows, someone's a millionaire for being dumb enough to spill their coffee all over themselves.....

I honestly never thought about that.... I guess I will have to do even more research into that today. Thanks I would much rather have that kind of "Oh Sh*t moment happen in the planning, than if sombody actually got sick. Thank you I will see what I can figure out.
