Dutch, My silkies hop up on the roosts. I think the bottom on is about 10 inches or so off the ground. I think I tried to put them around 18 inches apar and they jut hop up from there. When they get down is kind of funny as they wil try to fly and seem to bounce once or twice before they get settled on the ground. So far none have been hurt getting down which is a good thing.Question-- What do you do to get your silkies to roost?
I noticed mine keeps sleeping on the floor of the coop, not up on the roost with all the other ones.
I was thinking maybe she was still young so couldn't get up there yet, so out to the coop I go every night with a flashlight to pick her up and put her on there.
Then I just read that silkies don't have barbicles (spelling?) on their feathers so they can't fly up at all (don't know how I never realized that. Guess since my last roost was like a ladder my silkie roo just hopped to the top and I never noticed he didn't fly up there like the rest.
Guess I need to build a smaller roost for the silkie so she can hop up?
Won't she get cold in the winter if she's sleeping alone?
The first time I processed birds, I tried to hide it from my kids. when they figured out what I was doing, they came over and looked into the buckets. I thought they were going to freak, but they promptly picked up a chicken foot each and high fived each other using the chicken feet (it actually freaked me out a little bit). That's when I knew that they would be cool with me processing birds they had helped me raise. The silkies are still off limits as far as my daughter goes though.Yeah...youngest was 8..and she was the first to grab the knife. Oldest was 11 at the time..she processed in a skirt & high heels, it was funny. Anyway, they didn't have any problems with it and loved the outcome..DINNER.![]()
And Alex is a great teacher...![]()
CAT FOUND!!!! Yay! He was in the sewer the next street over! What a mess!
Are my month old chicks good to stay out overnight tonight without a heatlamp?
Don't know if I need to go bring them back in the house.
I have a heat lamp in the regular coop, but I think they're a little small to be in with the big chickens and I never caught whatever that predator was.
