He'll get his full coloring and first big boy train at 3yrs. It will be 3-4 ft. long. After that it will get longer up to 5+ ft. It will molt out every year around late summer and a new one will grow in. If you decide to free range him, just keep in mind he may leave in search of a mate. They mature a lot slower than most birds, because they have a much longer life span 20-30+ years. I have a 19 year-old peahen who laid and hatched 5 babies last summer, she's still going strong. Congrats on your new addition, I hope you enjoy him as much as I enjoy mine.

We're still trying to come up with a name for him. He's really friendly, I was afraid he'd be more aloof especially after just coming here. He doesn't like to be held, but he'll eat treats out of your hand.

Your welcome and thank you for the compliment on our white boys. It sounds like he has been well socialized with humans and perhaps even an incubator hatched Pea. None of them like to be held, not even the imprinted ones. I have an imprinted spalding who enjoys having his head and under his chin rubbed, but he does not appreciate me picking him up. Keep interacting with him, the more the better, and treats will go a long way toward keeping him friendly. Don't ask me for suggestions for names, mine have the worst names ever. My son has named most of them and I have a Fred, a Roger, a Kevin, etc..... it's truly embarrassing when people ask!

Oh he's so pretty!!!

I like Kevin! It's the name of the girl bird in "Up" (Disney movie) that's looks like it's half peacock half ostrich haha! I love that movie!

DH surprised me with my Mother's Day gift a week early! I am pretty excited! I have him quarantined over on the other side of the house. We have a lean-to for shelter, have to build another coop. He likes the tree roost we put in there though. He's only a year old. He's from a breeder out in Raeford.

ok I noticed one of my girls acting sluggish last couple of days. When i checked her out tonight i found what looks like lice and/or mites. What is the best way to treat her and the other chickens. I guess tomorrow and for the next week or so I'll be cleaning the coop and nest boxes. I have used DE in the past, guess I need to use more of it? I read somewhere that pyrethrum is good for spraying the coop down. Will it work on chickens too?

I use sevin dust and put it right on the birds, making sure I go against the feather so the dust gets down to the skin. I then repeat in one an a half to two weeks.
