Matt---I think you got more snow they we did; the winds DID arrive here, while we were driving into town.....I had heard of white-outs, but I'd never seen one before today. I hated to get out in this mess, but we were too low on fuel for the generator. Our power was restored around noon today, but I'm pretty sure it'll go out again.

CoffeeCow---my parents live in Little Washington; I did to for many years. Daddy use to have ducks, but mom made him get rid of them "they stink".

The wind is gusting so much that you can here icicles hitting the house. Saw quite a few vehicles in the ditches on our trip to town.

With the power back on, I can turn on the heater in the main barn---birds sure were happy about that. The temp had dropped to 42 with just their heat lamps on.

...........He is actually called Pie Bald BC which is sillier than pinto! but thats what it's called. Glad you got your power back. The winds have just started here. I have had 3 falls because of all of this snow it's hard to stay upright. My kids are all safe and snuggled in their house. Can't wait to see what tomorrow will bring. Thank goodness we have milk and bread

Hey I have ducks but I don't take offence yep they are messy and smelly but they are so funny and cute. But when they go to ducky heaven will probably not replace them, [well maybe not] Ya'll have a good night...

What a great day it was! Moms coop had seven eggs this morning. Her juviniles are just begining to lay there first eggs. Hope she comes home soon, I can't eat all her eggs. Guess I'll have to bake some cakes! Yum....
Think she might have another sick bird. It's my favorite too, her name is Chicpea! I rescued her from a friend last spring. She had a small bubble in her eye. She did seem to be very alert and active as usual. Any ideas? Culling this one might be a lil harder! This was not in the I'll watch your flock agreement. On top of all that moms dog lacy (12 yr old yellow lab) took an extended walk, wife and I were running around in pj's for 20 mins looking. Yeah Lacy has severe selective hearing too.. We have 9" at least.
Good thing Conan and the crew behave like all my animals! Wonderful angels. They are surly getting cabin fever. As soon as I turned to empty their water, they charged the door. They quickly stopped as the frozen air hit there beaks. So curious they are. Hope you are all warm!

Greenskeeper---good to see you'll are alive and well !! I know you'll get different opinions on this, but, the bird with the bubble in her eye---I wouldn't cull her. You can treat her with Duramycin---antibiotic added to her drinking water daily, for 7 days. Since she's been living with everyone else, you probably should treat the whole flock.

Trish---I LOVE ducks and geese; I use to have a white Chinese gander named "Bill".....he belonged to my dad, but hated my mom and would always bite her when she came outside. Bill had to come live with me......I was thrilled.....mom couldn't even get out of the car when she came over

If I had the room, I'd definitely have some ducks and geese. That reminds me of something my grandfather use to tell me.....he had every type of poultry imaginable.....when I was about 4 or 5 he got some crested ducks.....I asked him what was wrong with their heads and he said "ain't nothin' wrong; that's their pillow.....they take it off at night to rest their head on while they sleep" Of course I believed him!!! every word that came out of his mouth was gospel

That is a sweet story about the pillows. It's funny how a goose will pick one he doesn't like. Thats funny about your mother maybe it was jealously, My gander is so unpredictable one min he's talking to you sweetly the next he'll reach out and bite. He's a stinker for sure. By the way how are all your new chickens doing and hows the lil roo?

I hope chickpea makes a full recovery and your tummy settles down, I chicken sat for a friend for a weekend back in the fall. I was a nervous wreck, It poured the rain the whole time, but I made it through and so did they, Whew!

Well it looks like everyone got something from the winter blast that came thru. I'm glad to see everyone is faring good for the most part. We ended up with between 9-12 inches here outside Hickory. It did destroy all of our bird netting on our outside pens and they are 25x30 and 25x14. It was soo much that none of the chickens would come out at all to eat or drink. So we did some rearranging in the barn today and all of the big black orps are in the barn, wow are they happy!

It is a 30x40 horse barn that is slowly being converted to my chicken barn. I don't think the horses are very happy with me.

DH is building me an awesome bachelor hutch and I will do a bit more rearranging tomorrow and we will bring the lav orps in as well. This way everyone is under one roof for the winter and he can make improvements to the outdoor pens for this coming year.

I will post pics of the hutch when he is done, it is looking really good.

7.5" of snow here in little washington. 7.5 is the average I took from the yard. the most was a drift on the well house at 13.75" and on the lee side of the house I got 4.75" for the lowest totals.
