BHep - I'd love 1 of each, but the max my husband will allow (for now...

) is 8. <sigh> I will just have to use my womanly persuasions on him...AFTER the coop is built. If it's 10' x 20' realistically how many would we be able to have? Just curious...you know, so I can mention it...

Coyote - Glad to hear you managed to make it out of TS empty handed. I didn't know they sold chickens though...I might have to locate the nearest one to me and check them out!!

Goodmorning all

Nice and sunny but cool here. Wind was serious last night. Didn't get too much rain, lots of lightening.

ML..... You know you will have those chicks in your hand before you walk out the door of TS.

Ok everybody, feel free to correct me...

Someone said the "magic numbers" are 4 & 10. Four square feet of coop space per bird AND ten square feet of run space per bird. These are suggested minimums. If your birds stayed inside all the time, the coop needs to be bigger. No one set of numbers fit all situations.

I have 21 birds in a run that by definition could hold 40 birds. They sleep and sometimes lay in their 4x6 dog house (by definition only 6 birds). I do not lock these birds in their coop at night, so when they've had enough together time, they go out! DH reports the black hens are up with the roosters at false dawn, currently about 4 AM.

For my "flighty" breeds I have designed breeding pens that are 17' long. The narrowest pens are three feet. I haven't finished the "fattest" pen yet. The skinny pen (3x17=91) could hold nine birds, but that doesn't include the "Summer house" they will need. Most likely the skinny pen will hold a breeding trio or quad.

Hmm... 10x20=200/4= 50!
200/10=20 even if you considered the coop their run space, lol.

Seriously though, birds love space. The more the better. I'd design the run to be at least 500 sq.ft. This doesn't have to be one run. You may find in the future that letting your hens out in "left field" while your roosters run "right field" might make for more domestic tranquility! At our old house I drove my husband nuts by moving the coop and run all over the place. Chickens are great for cleaning up your garden in Winter! I highly recommend permanent fences and movable fences.

Hope this helps!

WOW! THANK YOU!!! This is a huge, huge help. I don't want to make the poor little girl worse, I'm just starting to get the feeling that if I don't do something, she's not going to make it much longer. Goodness, wish you and Lydia could come on over and help me with this!

If you do happen to find the name of the syringe you mentioned, could you send it my way? Sounds like that is the route I should go. Not sure how to ask for it at TSC though? THANK YOU!!

Lydia-Thanks for the support! I was really hoping she would be better by now too, chickens are not for the squeamish, that's for sure! I love broodies, there just isn't anything cuter then a hen w. chicks!

Ugh, sad morning. My little Olive Egger isn't doing well. Here's what I posted on her "Emergencies" thread:

Thanks for the sweet messages, it was a rough night and rough morning. She's not doing well. I cut down into what should be the core, but nothing. Just flesh. She was great during the whole procedure, cooing at me the whole time. The best I can tell, it must be a tumor or growth of some kind. There just simply was no infection that I could find, no bad smell, no oozing junk, just flesh.

This morning she isn't walking and has no appetite. I got her to drink a little and forced her to eat a little but I don't think it will be long until I lose her.

Sad morning here. Why does it always have to be your favorites that seem to have the problems? I hatched out two of her babies for the New Year's hatch, so that's some comfort.

Have to get myself together. Crying at my desk over a chicken in an office work environment. Ugh.
