vfem I went to the auction in clayton, it is run well and clean, can't vouch for every animal. I did get a very sweet & pretty pair of bantam cochin. I was early enough to check out the animals and spotted them. They had mites/lice, which I was not surprised or worried about. They are in quarentine for a min of 30 days anyway so are automaticly wormed and debugged. I have also sold a bunch. Took 13 there and sold them all. I plan on going again, I have 2 more roosters and I am waiting on my next hatchs to see what I don't want. I have 60 plus eggs due to hatch next week.

Is there a large selection of birds? And how high do the bids usually go? I'm thinking about going this weekend.

chicks went for $2-$4 each
layers 8-10 plus
some full grown rooster 15-20
rabbits 6-10 plus
depends on the breed etc.

EYA............chicks had 4-15 plus per box. money is x bird. if you bid $2 times 10 chicks = $20...

BHep - AWE!! I had NO idea a roo does all of that. I almost wish my husband was like that. (SHHHH

) The only reason I wanted to keep him separate was because ... well ... I think my husband is deathly afraid of eating a ... fertilized egg.

Honestly, that was the only reason!! He keeps talking about making sure we know who's been bred with whom...and so yeah.

- I had to do SOMETHING to appease his fears...although I did see chicken "panties"

Suggestions?? Will you ever know if an egg has been fertilized? (assuming the hen hasn't gone broody)
hu.gif
If one of the hens decides (and we're at the point we let her) to hatch some, won't she want/need to be separated from the others, or will she be fine where she's at? : hu As you can see...we still have a LOT to learn!! Thank you so much for all of your help everyone!!

just don't tell him if it is fertilized or how to tell.. look it up here there are pic.... it is a small white bullseye on the yoke.

p.s. there are thread on here,, some people have hatched out store bought, refrigerated eggs. So ya never know!

ETA............... there is no difference in fertilized & non fert. eggs as far as taste. Even if hen is broody , does not mean eggs are fertilized. Just means she want to sit. its nature!

I personaly would not seperate the rooster. Chickens are flocks, they don't like to be alone. I only seperate for medical reasons.

Ohh I want to go!!! Maybe I can convince DH to go this sunday. Coop should be done by then anyways, and I'm way too excited to get some birds running around in my yard! My kids would love it... ds is begging to get some chicks from TSC every time we drive by the place.

Anyone else planning on going Sunday?

Thanks everyone!! Ok, so I will just ignore the bullseye if I see one. Haha...guess if we give any extra away to our friends I'll have to make sure they don't get any "bullseye" eggs!!

Hmm...now the question is...what to do with that "space" over there?? Suggestions? I could use it for storage or for isolation (sickness/new bird introduction/etc...) HELP!! I'll need something before DH comes home and wants to go shopping for materials...

best thing is to not say anything about the eggs being fertile because no one will know unless you tell them.. It's tempting to go and by birds from auctions and swaps but I have read some very sad stories on BYC from people who did just that and either brought in sickness to the birds they have or just bought sick birds un beknowing . Please be careful..
