Good morning everyone, and
welcome-byc.gif
EFudd. I hope your wifes name isn't BuggsB. as far as your new hens go they should settle in pretty quick, I just got 3 new hens about a month ago and it took one a day the other 2 about a week before they started laying regular. and they do take breaks every so often also. just feed them a good feed and be sure to give them extra oyster shell on the side to help with all the calcium they will need to produce a nice hard shell. You'll enjoy them so much. And congrats on the rest of the flock coming around Easter too. Be sure to post pictures when you can we love pictures.

well yesterday was a 3 ring circus around here, still no Brahma egg hatch, but the other 2 are looking good even if they tried to be stolen by another hen, and my little mama frizzle was going to take on the goose so had to separate them this morning, he's very mean this time of year and won't put up with her temper as she feels he's threatening her chicks. [breeding season is so much fun]
rant.gif
so anyway next set to hatch on Sunday so we'll see, not sure if the brahma egg was fertile but I'll wait till she gives the signal before taking it away. So can't wait to see pictures of your new chicks Ruthann, and yours are so beautiful scm, couple look like little chipmonks.

I hope Em is okay she hasn't posted since that day she talked about the emu eggs getting knocked over, I hope they didn't hatch out and their being held hostage..

no seriously guess I'll have to send her a PM. ya'll have a good one.

Morning all !

EFudd ( love that) I have lots (= too many) of chickens and 90% have names. Not all the chicks do yet! I have 8 GC, they are awesome layers and I can count on a egg a day from each, they rarely miss a day. Plus they get super friendly! Pics & questions welcome.

SCM... ADORABLE! And good luck on the little ones surgery !

NH... guess if you get a bunch of roosters, I will have to introduce you to the auction.... to sell, not to buy.
hide.gif
I hatched some bantam cochin and I swear 4/5 are roosters
th.gif

HT... I held some of those CMs back, sold 1/2. Just out of curiousity, I only have 1 rooster with feathering on the legs. I may just hang on to them. I also held on to the white one and course its a rooster and the brownish (hen) looks wild colored. Is that a color ? Sort of quail coloring. Now glad I did.... I will let them grow out a bit and then decide. They are safe from the auction....for now

AND.... I have chicks Hatching

When I first got my 2 laying hens, the first chickens since the early 80's for me, it took them about 5 days to really settle in and crank it up. What are their ages? If they are young and just starting to lay, they can go every other day to every three days until they going good. As they days get longer you will have more eggs they you know what to do with, but it is hard to wait.

I have only named about 4 of my flock so far. Two RIR's, Ginger and Mary Ann, and one BLRW who didn't turn out to be laced, Since she is a nice light blue color she is Lovey. I have one roo my DH named Fancy Pants, was suppose to be a Blue cochin Pullet. I just haven't found the right names for the rest.

SCM, those babies are so cute!

Caleb and I got the brooder like 90% done this morning. I just need to build the lid and fill up the waterer and feed thing (have to get feed first though! Pictures are on page 155 of the Brooder thread in Raising chicks section. It's nothing fancy, just a glorified box!

**Your new babies will slowly get into egg laying mode. A move from location to another does cause stress and in most cases stop the hens from laying temporarily. With all my moved birds, the little newbies have taken as long as 3 weeks to get back to laying. A few started after a week though, but it was a slow lay of less then half their normal rate of production. Its ok though, once they are comfortable... you will be swimming in large white & brown ovals of goodness!

SCM - I'm melting over all the cuteness!!! I need to go photo my babies some more, they all have wing feathers now and their tail feathers appear to be starting too. I can't BELIEVE how fast they actually grow. Its insane!!!

Ruth - You will be sooooooooooo ready when they get there, you have no worries... you really have it all together, you know what to expect, and you have US!

Looks like today is going to be AMAZING out.... I'm hoping to go pick up more compost and get to work on another bed today. I hope you get a chance to take advantage too.

Good morning everyone - haven't been on in a while.. I hope everyone is doing while and having wonderful hatches!! How are all the new babies doing from the March hatches..

So glad spring is here!! Flowers are being planted and last years are blooming. I have some SG babies due at the end of this week, mottled cochins due in 2 weeks and I am hoping my magpie call ducks eggs will be ready for shipping - two weeks ago fertility was up to almost 50%...

had to take my laptop to the doctors yesterday - I was looking up bantam BLRW and hit a site and everything went hay wire
he.gif
(and the bad thing is I can't remember which farm site it was)

A little story from this morning - I told my husband I wanted a heated barn so i can get a sulcata tortoise.. his answer was I can build you an imagery heated barn for your imagery tortoise which will also house my imagery tractor.. I told him I would let him install a heated stove in the barn!!
hu.gif
don't guess it worked..

I am still waiting on my domestic skunk but I will have to wait until they are legal in NC

have a blessed day everyone

Good Morning everyone! Thanks so much for the warm welcomes to the forum! I joined a FlyFishing forum a while back, and although I have gotten some good info, I never received a friendly welcome from them.......Chicken owners must just have warm hearts. I appreciate the answers to the questions too. I had kind of thought it might take about a week for them to adjust, but I wasn't sure since one of them gave me a beautiful brown A-1 Large on Sunday ( the A-1 Large is actually some Statler Brothers humor.....don't worry I'll be here all week! LOL!).

My 3rd question of many many more is (drum roll please....)- What Laying feed do you all feed? I picked up a bag from the Tractor Supply on Saturday. It is a Purina, Natural Plant Protien, no animal by-product, pellet that was made for Hens that are laying (extra calcium). I realize this isn't Organic Feed, but it was the best I could get at the time. I have also been told that as summer comes on and more bugs come out, I won't need to give them feed very often.

4th, have you ever heard of adding Apple Cider Vinegar to their water? The man that I got my houses from said Apple Cider Vinegar was a cure all with his Chickens. He also told me to make sure I gave it to them when I got new birds and quarentine those newbies a while before introducing them to the flock. Do any of you use "ACV" in your birds water? I have notice that on the days I have given them a dose in the water, I get an egg.....hmmmmm......wonder what they would do for some Balsamic Vinegar and Olive Oil? LOL

Good Afternoon Everyone!! I popped on long enough to tell everyone....that I bought my FIRST BAG of pine shavings & play sand today and some grit. Would you believe it took me FOREVER to find play sand that was not colored? I suppose it's because the colored stuff sells for $5 more than the plain, but still.
barnie.gif

Tomorrow I go to TSS to pick up some feed as well as a feeder & waterer for the barn, as well as some deer netting for the rafters and a roll of hardware cloth for the doors/windows and eaves. Just curious...we have a 36 gallon plastic tote - do you think that will be okay to house the 7 "little" ones in until Saturday evening? I don't know how big 7 week BO & LO are and I don't want them to be cramped or anything. We have some type of dog crate outside in the shed, but the DH was afraid to use it as it's not ours (it was left here) and he's not sure if it's all there. If you don't think the tote will work, I'll ask him to set it up and find a spot for it in the house...haha now having hardwood floors throughout is NOT a good idea...haha. Suggestions? Pointers? I promise to post pictures just as soon as I get them all set up and acclimated to me!
wee.gif
is it Friday yet??

On a side note....I am officially orange!! I bought some organic poison ivy anti-itch defense stuff...haha, and it's ORANGE. At least I can see where I put it, although since I have it on 40% of my body...the orange clashes with my pink outfit.
lau.gif
It may smell bad, but at least I am not itchy....for now!! I just thought you all would enjoy the mental image of me, matching my BO's!!
gig.gif
Have a great afternoon everyone!!

P.P.S: Thanks Allison!! I'll be sure to call if I have any questions or concerns.
big_smile.png
SUPER EXCITED!! Thank you SO much for parting with a few of your babies for us!! DD is excited too, she just doesn't know it yet!!
lau.gif

Edited to add: I think I need a GL something or other...
lau.gif
saw one on the raising chicks forum and it was a beauty!! Looks like that will be my next adventure after these 7 get acclimated.
hide.gif
I guess that means I should put the DH to work on the isolation coop!!

OMG have you guys all seen the chicken park on this thread? https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=482852 If my girls get a look I am in big trouble. I have chicken land envy.
Thanks for the help on the decision to use pea pebble or sand....I will be boxing in that section and using sand. Now just how do I keep my 6 very well minded cats out of the enormus litter box???
th.gif
Guess I better keep a pooper scooper out there.

You will love the forum. All your questions can be answered.

Well I am short a picture because it got late last night and Wilma and I were finsihing up our work in my shed. Because her big hair keeps getting BIGGER I went to Food Lion and got a pack of kids scrunchies...the soft material not metal ones and put up her poof. Wilma did not skip a beat and was running after me in the yard and helped me all night in the shed looking from my shoulder. I think she loved being able to see. Ooor she is just a Diva
