Second hatch of the year is under way. I am using my King Suro 20. The
12 bantam eggs looked good. 2 are out in the bator and several pipped. I moved 5 of the bantam eggs to 'Big Sissy', a proven bantam cochin broody. 3 of those eggs were pipped. I think one of those has hatched now. The last I checked, 'Big Sissy' was fluffed up covering the entire nest. She was clucking so hard her entire body was bouncing with each cluck, so she is making the switch from broody to mama mode. I am taking these 2 bator babies down to her shorty. She is still in the cochin house, but everyone else is shut out. I will finish getting her broody house ready and she will be moved this evening. These chicks are from my tricolored mixes(see avatar).
9-11 Standard Cochin eggs looked good. 3 of those eggs were pipped. I moved those to 'Maggie'. This is the first time I have let Maggie have chicks. The last I checked she was still growling like a broody. I hope that by the time a chick hatches she will start clucking. If she doesn't make the switch to mother mode I will try 'Daisy', a buff Orp that is also a first timer.
Since I also had 9 eggs in there bator that are not due for another 2 weeks I had to fire up the hovabator and move those eggs in there. They will go back to the Suro once this hatch is finished. I am using the Suro to hatch because it cleans up fast and easy.
