SJM - Lol...are you SURE you don't want to come over and make the pie?? LOL I HATE making pies - maybe that's because I don't like pie....who knows!! To be technical (which I rarely am) the feed is only a 45 ish minute drive - depending on traffic. This is a special "local" feed company that allows you to purchase organic, non-GMO, soy-free (DD has an allergy to soy...among other things) chicken feed. Since our chickens are also our breakfast makers and possibly our dinners, we had to make sure the feed was soy free and unless you have a local mill that will do the work for you, this is the best option we have. They drive to Cary on the 2nd Wednesday of every month to deliver feed to the Raleigh area, so it's a lot cheaper than having the feed shipped!!
All in all for a 50# bag, I don't pay much more than I would had I bought the "regular" feed from the nearby
TSC (unless you factor in gas for my gas guzzling suv!!) Needless to say, DD is WORTH IT!!
How sweet that you have someone nearby to "teach you the ropes"!! I am self taught and find it fun now that my mother is attempting to learn to sew!! She Skypes me to literally SHOW me the directions and asks me what they mean!!
She claims directions are NEVER written for a lefty to understand them.
I don't get it since I too am a lefty, but I let her have that one!!
My MIL tried to teach me to make granny squares, but I soon learned I would rather sit and sew an outfit that will be completed in a day or two than to spend weeks on crocheting something that I may never finish!! I only spend weeks on quilts, but that's because I have to!! I am still envious of you...you have a festival near you, a sewing buddy, things to do....yes...jealous!! I am 20 minutes from the nearest "town" and that's not even a town...it's just the grocery store. You know you live in no-man's land when the nearest
Walmart is a good 35+ minute drive!!
Still...I get to have oodles of chickens, so I'll take it!!
BHep - do you think your NN's would wear scarves? Do their little naked necks get cold in the winter?? HOW DO they survive??
So while BHep is dealing with a Rodent of Unusual Size (a PB reference just for you Buttercup!!
) and a snake...I am dealing with ANTS!! Apparently I have a colony living in the WALL?? Set up ant traps last night and DH is calling the pest control guy to come out and investigate.
Seriously, we've lived here a YEAR and already we're finding more and more problems!! UGGH!! Well...at least the rain will fill our well, there's something to look forward to!!
Gavin - I meant to tell you...I didn't get a chance to use the pepper because our girls MUST have heard us talking...I got 5 eggs last night!!
Although...4/5 eggs were from the Marans (including the Mutant green/brown egg!!) and only 1 was from the Orps.
I still may try to add some pepper when I fill up their feed tonight!! What do you think?? I'll keep you posted!!
