How does she look lower abdomen? does she look like she has fluid in her belly? the reson i am asking is one of my hens acted simular, and then I started noticing her belly almost dragging the ground it's called astites I think is how it's spelled, it fluid built up and it happens to meat birds and I guess egg layers too because mine had it, we finally had to put her down, she went along good for a couple of months eating and foraging with the rest then i noticed she wasb't eating and standing around all hunched over. Of course this is just a guess. Or she could be an internal layer and has infection which there is nothing that can be done. I'm sorry Ruthann it's just another part of having chickens, the sad part.

You may not want to hear this but you may want to consider that she has Mareks.

It affects more flocks than people want to admit, talk about, know of, or even think about. What makes me say mareks for your girls sluggish nature, the low tail and now leg problems as the legs are a tail tail sign in mareks. Mareks can affect different birds differently as far as time frame, some fall prey to it fast while others show slow affects till the are gone. Mareks can come from just about any setting and you will never know your birds have it till they start to show signs, others will be carriers for life, it is shed in dander. Not all birds are or will be affected even if they are carriers. I believe wild birds also carry mareks, as well as lots more diseases and parasites. *It is only carried on live birds and not hatching eggs* If it is Mareks there is not fix or cure, death will occur.

We have not vaccinated in the past, only kept up with PT & AI testing, however with our increasing showing starting this year we will be vaccinating all chicks for mareks and the entire flock for Newcastle/Bronchitis. I have poured too much of my heart into my flocks to loose them to things that I can help prevent.

Is there a test for it so you can know if that is the problem or you have carriers in the flock?

AND if you are like me...........you will imagine that one of your birds have a symptom or two.

It is just like self diagnosing yourself from a medical book or website.
