Plans for today.............WCA

I am bringing:
All sorts of hatching eggs (10 1/2 dozen)
and some chicks
A Ringneck Pheasant male
and
I MAY bring some Cochin X hens.

When and where is the WCA? I heard about it yesterday and forgot to get an address!!

I have learned what t his cheicken math is and told my DH and he cracked up and then said it is true. We started out that we were going to get 8, but then just rounded it to 10, but after trying to find what all of us wanted and to arrive in a time frame where we could have enough time to get things ready we ended up with 26. So he said "yup I can see the chicken math".

Doesn't take long to learn...

Here's what we did last weekend, we did more today but I haven't got any pics yet, maybe later. Anyhow, it's from "The Art of the Chicken Coop" and supposed to hold up to 15. I think that may be a little cramped. It's 8'x4' and we have done some modifications, it's also moveble with 2 16" wheels in front.

It's cute, and I think you maybe right about it being tight for 15, you gotta give chickens room or they start pecking on each other, so may want to build 2 or 3 or 10...

A chilly soggy day...but I still have to go out and clean the brooder side of the henhouse. My meat chicks are on the way! It'll be a fun chore, for sure, but better today than yesterday.

I loaded an incubator yesterday. 40 Orpington eggs and one lone turkey egg. I have Bourbon Red and Royal Palms out there, so it could be one, or a cross. Or infertile; this is the first season for these girls. We shall see. I had saved four dozen eggs, forgetting that I planned on using a turner and I can't put so many eggs in with that. But I'll be doing an incubator load every three to six weeks. I have two brooder areas, so can have a batch in each before they move out into the chicken world. By the time this incubator load is ready to join the big kids, we'll have the new chicken house ready to go, and can split all the birds up into color groups. I want to build my flock back up; I've let it go down to less than 30 birds!

It's going to be a fun chicken-y summer!

Thanks! I think the plans go by the 2 sq feet per bird school of thought. I'm planning on free ranging them when we are out in the yard and keeping them in a run otherwise. We have just under an acre that backs up to some woods that are home to deer, coons, possum and hawks. Hubs built a "kiddie corral" aka 4 ft fence with pasture wire around a large portion of our property before he left to keep our toddler from roaming too far while I'm taking care of the garden and her little sister. I already want more after seeing some of the lovely birds here, but we'll need to get some more land. Plus I'm sure I'll have some after thoughts of a better design down the road.
