Some just get to stay for sentimental reasons..

We might be taking some more stuff in a couple of weeks too... We still have a few here, we can do without for the winter.

I hope they sell for a good price.

The Sebright that I was worried about just a few days ago is doing great, so Chris has just taken her back to her run to return to normal bird life. I tried to post a new pic of her with Chris holding and petting her, but I still can't get them to post. I wish I new why???

The Diva Baby is still not out of the woods, so keep your crossables crossed and say a little prayer for the sweet Birdie. She has eaten a little fruit, but not much in the way of solid food in a few days. It has been a rough few days because I worry over these babies when they are sick just as much as I do my children.

We also brought home bugs from the WCA during the last 2 weeks. Luckily it was contained to the small hutch and track run. Unfortunately the bird that is still sick was in a temp run with the chicks that I brought home (with her leg injury) for a short bit. I removed her when they started running her over, but she had the bugs on her too...

Sooo.... We have aggressively de-bugged the run and all birds that had contact with, as well as the area under the big tree. That was along day going around to all birds and basically turning them up and checking for signs. It could have been worse; they could have gotten into the hen house, and the rooster (bachelor pad), but did not. I don't normally use... but had to break out the strong stuff for quick control. Normally I just use DE, but I could not take the chance of it getting into the other runs, or let this take over.

I hope everyone else is having a better weekend, I'm just worn out!

I tell you I have a bit a problem, 2 of my hens have bald spots on their backs and I have seen the other 2 hens eating their feathers. It's odd, I have had chickens before and seen a pecking order but in this flock of 4 I see no pecking order. There is no dominant hen that I can see, no pecking, grabbing of the neck, hens mounting hens, anything of that nature...when I have seen 2 of the hens eating the feathers of the other 2 they just gently walk up to them and eat the feather, the other chicken makes a slight noise of annoyance, not a cry of pain, and then they'll walk away. But now they have 2 pretty large bald spots, and I'm afraid this could lead to inflammation or blood.

There are 4 chickens in a 5x10 coop/run, they have access to food 24/7, clean water, treats daily, peace quiet and dark at night, no roosters, they get to free range an hour or so a day, and they eat Purina Leyena Crumbles (http://poultry.purinamills.com/OURPRODUCTS/Products/Layena/default.aspx) it's 16% protein.

I feel like I have all the bases covered...so why are they eating feathers?

I just ordered 2 chicken saddles from my pet chicken, I hope this helps allow the new feathers to grow back. I am leaving for the beach Saturday for a week, and have neighbors watching my birds...I don't want this problem getting worse!

It is molting season......... and doublea makes saddles.

I have heard a lot about the WCA. Can you tell me more about it and maybe shoot me the web link? It sounds like a farmers market kind of a thing...but I'm not sure.
