Well, the turkeys are locked in and the chickens will go in at sunset, so we'll be all prepared for testing tomorrow. The inspector is supposed to come around 8:30. I won't be doing any chores in the morning. It'll all be waiting on him. This time tomorrow I'll know where I stand, anyway!

So maybe this will be a dumb question but bear with me I've only had chickens since last July and never had layers in the fall/winter months. The past few days the egg production of my hens has gone down dratically. It went from 9-10 eggs a day to 4-5 eggs a day. This is with even some young hens starting to lay which should put me at 14 layers. What is going on? I think a couple of my original hens (who are now over a year old) are starting to molt so that explains missing a couple eggs, but not as many as I have been missing. We put some old hay out there in their lot over the weekend to help with the mud problem we have with their lot. DH and I both looked around for hidden nests in the straw or anything else that would be off and explain missing eggs. What is going on? Could the cooler weather already be triggering them to stop laying? Or are all the original hens going off laying (that would be 6 hens) right now and I'll just be relying on the younger hens (which would be 7 layers plus 1 I am still waiting on to start) right now? Today I got 2 EE eggs (older hens), a leghorn egg (young hen) and a brown one (which may be from my young turken or one of the original RIRs).

Marlow its molting time whether their young or old they will molt. this does slow up eggs and the light change will affect laying also unless you supplement their light hope this helps

That does help. The young ones are only 6 months old. I thought they don't do a huge molt till they are at least a year old. I've noticed more feather loss on a couple of my EE hens (they were already a little roughed up from previous roos) and it may be starting on the RIRs a bit since their feathers look a bit thin.

We were actually afraid that the 5-6 foot blacksnake we have in our storage building may have migrated to the chicken coop, but neither DH or I found evidence of it.

I guess when they say everything hits at once they really do mean it! I'm gonna have to take a hiatus from my chicken farming due to a little bun in the oven

......I'm kind of in shock and not sure how to feel about it at the moment. But I guess I have to get everything around the house buttoned up before it happens, and I doubt the chickens will help me get "house chores" done. So in the next few days I will be putting up a list of what I have and what needs to go

. Thanks for letting me vent a little.....I guess the next step is to inform my mother! Wish me luck!

Oh, been there, done that, have two boys bigger than me to show for it! When I told my mom I was pregnant the first time she cried.

Then she apologized for crying.

You should have seen my husband's face when our first son was born (I should try to find that pic and post it...it's HILARIOUS). He's holding our son--all wrapped up like the nurses do--and he has this deer-in-the-headlights look on his face. When I saw the pic I asked him, "Dude, what's with that look?"

He told me, "It wasn't really REAL until they handed me the baby!"

I laughed and laughed. 3 months of extreme morning sickness (I lost 15 pounds, best/worst diet ever), 3 months of bed rest at the end, and more hormonal mood swings than even I care to remember, and the whole BABY thing isn't "real" until they hand him our son?

The nice thing about a baby is that they start out slow before they pick up speed. You've got time before you have to worry about a kid that can crawl or walk. Then you've got some time before you have to worry about a kid that talks (and repeats EVERY swear word you ever slip up with...in front of company, it never fails). Then you've got more time before you have to figure out the school deal. And even more time before they hit that teenage thing - which I personally believe (now that mine are 17 and 20), is God's way of making you kind of glad when they move out on their own.

Congratulations!

ETA: We weren't married when I found out I was pregnant...hence the tears from Mom. We got married when I was 5 months along. That's when I found out that people will LIE to pregnant/hormonal brides without even blinking! Everyone told me I didn't look pregnant (and it's a sign of the pregnancy stupids that I even asked), but all you have to do is look at the pics. I'm either pregnant or I'm hiding a turkey under the dress for later!
