KellyHM- Good point! Two sweet little baby silkies would be good but my MIL lives within city limits so they would have to be hens.
Along the same lines, does anyone have a really broody hen that we could buy? Could she live next to but not in with our layers? Do they need time to adjust or is it better to let them get straight to work? We could give her eggs to set on immediately. We have no preference as far as breed.

You usually have to wait for a hen to become broody before you can give her eggs. I'm guessing that even if a hen is broody now, she will lose that broodiness if she is moved to a new home. My broody hen gets very attached to her nest box and gets very upset if she is moved. A good used incubator would be more reliable. Even the chicks that our hen hatched had to be moved inside to the brooder.
bonnylass- Thanks for the info. Hmmm, maybe I'll experiment with my own layers come springtime. One almost went broody maybe she'll 'get in the mood' as the weather warms.
My broody hen is a riot. We let her hatched out four eggs right before the new year. Well, the day old chicks wouldn't stay in the box and one died. So the remaining three went in the brooder and we gave her seven two week old chicks. Now those are her babies and she gets ticked if I try to handle any of them. She won't know what to do when I give her the other ten still in the brooder this weekend.
btw, I'm still planning to be there. Hubby may bring a chicken condo. I'm looking for food grade DE, saddles and BCM chicks and hatching eggs.
