Northeastern Poultry Congress 2014

I don't know if I'm the one to help...I always feel a bit out of place. The one tip I could give is to stay out of the row when the judges are there. As every one at this show is required to feed and water their own birds, there is a good chance you could talk to the breeder of birds you're interested in. I've gotten some wonderful advice from breeders who are delighted with their breed and want to further the fancy, so they share information willingly.

I am new to showing and my first show (this past fall) I paced for 6 hours! Judging can be a slow painful process, so once your birds are cooped there is not much you can do. I recommend talking to people!! I have met great people showing their birds, and there are many with tons of experience and willing to share. At the Poultry Congress there is a lot to see! Just observing other people prepping birds is a great learning experience. I think all of the people selling are showing also so you socialize with them as you browse! The one thing I regret doing at my last show is notgetting contact info (at least facebook) so I could stay in touch between shows. Last year BYC had a table, I am not sure if there is one this year.

One big etiquette issue is cooping out early. It is highly frowned upon!
Good luck at the show!

THanks BLarney eggs and liljunie-- I would pace too hence I am not putting any birds in the show. I would like to encourage my kids though and they are i nterested in attending after a short glimps of the BOston show during clean up.

So we can view the birds, just not the aisle the judge is it. Are judges easy to ID? Do they all wear a white lab coat or something?? ANd have an aid scribing??

GOsh , it would be nice to have a table to meet everyone , though I'm sure with all the entrtainment in other areas it is hard to meet everyoe short of a designated meet and greet hour.

SO if I don't get to see all of you, good luck and safe travels.

Looks like they also have a bunch of good talks as well. I'm going to try to go to the talks on flock health and incubation. And might have to stick around for the bird raffle if I enter and don't buy something at the sale.

@Arielle, yes the judges will be easy to spot in their white lab coats and usually have an clerk scribing for them. If you see me, say hello, I am in a brown sweater and brown boots.

@ Joanie, the sale area has some gorgeous birds in it. I saw Jamie Matts here, he's not judging, so he must be showing, his bantam Cochins are stellar, if I notice he's gott anything for sale, I'll hop back on here and say so.

ETA: OOPS!! I lied. Jamie IS judging!!

I've heard there are 3300 birds here and it looks like it! This is not including the water fowl. Hope to see some of you there, we are about to head over to feed and water.

I looked for you, Heidi. Didn't see you.

I enjoyed the talk on Incubation, also saw Michael Darre talk speak about pests. Good stuff. My son got BB with his BCMarans pullet and my daughter's Orpingtons did well too. Somehow my son talked me into buying some D'Uccles. Woo hoo!
