Northeastern Poultry Congress (West Springfield) - Jan 17-18, 2009

Birch Run,
we're planning to show next year... We're planning to also stay at a hotel near there, but one of the things I wondered was:
Are the owners of the birds responisble for feeding/watering their birds or do show volunteers do that?
When we entered fairs last year, we would drop our animals for the weekend or what-have-you and people there take care of them. Just curious.

Thank you, thats what I thought too, and I have to say, there were people everywhere, and it was like no one was seeing what he was doing, or caring! I really wanted to say something to him, but I am not his parents, and he clearly had little respect for adults since he knew what he was doing was not OK.

I would love to show some of my birds next year, infact I have inadvertantly created a new color, I have a silver laced blue cochin! Her daddy is a lovely dark blue cochin, and her mommy is a silver laced cochin, and she is a lovely dark blue, and starting to develop her white lacing now! We are so excited by her! If her Body shape is good, we may bring her down, but I will want to have someone standing gaurd over the cages!

Oh, and I understand about the weather, we are from NH, and the drive home got tedious just over the state line! and worse as we went further north! I was grateful for my 4 wheel drive! Funny thing tho, On my last leg of the journey, after dropping all my passengers off, a little economy car slid into my rear end! I was driving my big GMC 3/4 ton Pick up, and this little car slid into my trailer hitch! I could barely see it in my rear view it was so small! No damage done to me, and just a cracked bumper for them, so no harm done, but it was the perfect cap to the week end! I had to laugh! It was like David and goliath!

See I am so glad I didnt see that child. Because I would have said something to the child and to the people in charge. And if still nothign was done. I would have grabbed the little monster.

That is cruelty to animals to harass them that way.

My mom stepped in years ago to rescue a little duckling at a petting zoo that was being repeatedly picked up and thrown back down by a child that had no parental supervision. It must run in the family that we are always up for a go round if it involves the safety and well being of animals or small kids.

I was also really bummed by the number of banties. Redhen and I skipped a lot of those isles

Jenna,

I stayed at the host hotel and was pretty happy with it. It was a little $$ but I am hoping to split costs with a neighbor for next year.

You can coop in early on Friday afternoon which is what I did. I fed and watered my own birds. They provide the shavings and cups for food and water. I kept a baggie of food and a 1 liter bottle of water under the coop table with my travel cage.

For security I might add some small pad locks next year but you need to make sure they are off when the judges come around because they take your birds out to evaluate them. Once they are done judging you can lock the birds back up. Though I left a lot of stuff under the table no one stole anything. It seems like a family event and am not sure if thefts occur. I only saw one coop with a lock on it, I saw another with a cable tie.

There are other New England poultry shows, there is one in NH in October I believe. I was going to enter into that one but my birds were not old enough, the secretary told me they should be at least 6 months old so they had adult feathers. I think there are a few clubs in Maine that also have a show or two. RI has a show as well. The Congress is the biggest in the NE though.

I had a lot of fun so I hope more of you come and show!

I know PA has a lot of restrictions on bringing birds in from out of state, so if you don't live there, it will be a pain to get there for a show.
