Birds have to be pullorum/typhoid and AI tested and clean within a year of the show to be shown in MA.

Thank you, and is that something you go to a vet for, or does a state person come out? is there an average cost?

A state certified tester comes to your house, free of charge, takes a small blood sample from each bird, puts on a leg band, and sends the blood out to be tested. You get your certificate and card within a few weeks.

HAHA Chickenpied, we posted at the same time

NH also offers testing for pullorum/typhoid and AI. They used to charge, but have been offering free testing for the past couple years. Here's the contact information to get tested in New Hampshire:

Dr. Stephen K. Crawford, State Veterinarian
New Hampshire Department of Agriculture & Division of Animal Industry,
P.O. Box 2042, Concord 03302-2042.
Phone: (603)271-2404, FAX: (603)271-1109

Just give them a call and tell them you would like to get your flock NPIP tested and they can set you up with a date for someone to come to your place to test your birds. They will take a blood sample from each bird and affix a legband with a matching number to the blood sample. Once your birds test negative, then you will receive a card & certificate in the mail. In NH they test our chickens and turkeys, but not our waterfowl.

NPIP stands for National Poultry Improvement Plan, and we've been NPIP certified for the past 4-5 years. It's necessary if you want to enter your birds in shows & fairs.

We went on Sat - late morning. I had a headache and coerced DH into coming by promising to buy the yearly parking sticker for the Big E grounds. We found out they are no longer selling the yearly stickers.

Soooo, we didn't stay long. One quick sweep of the ailses and DH was already to go. The whole fairgrounds was a mad house as they had an Auto swap meet in one building and a motorcycle show in another bulilding!
My sentiments have already been aired by others. Somewhat disappointed by the lack of the variety of larger chickens. And lack of variety of species. I was hoping to see some of those cute button quail, which I have only seen pics of. Sigh...
I too, was very disappointed in the sales area. And pet birds would've been fine for me.
I am not really interested in showing, but I am curious, too, as to what is needed to get started. Is a health certificate needed to prove vax's, etc? And are the cages provided?
Here are some of my pics. They did have the winners in their center aisle cages, but my camera crapped out right as I was trying to photograph them.
