Northeastern Poultry Congress (West Springfield) - Jan 17-18, 2009

I went and got there this morning at 7:55am. I got a great show pair of white calls and I also got a really nice pair of self blue old english. Yes, dftkarin there was swarms of people at the show. The best day to buy birds was today, but you had to be there right when the doors opened. The Old English I got were $30 for the pair. I was looking for a trio, but all they had was pairs.

There was some silkies for sale, but nothing special, all were Pet quality. There were also some ice crele old english bantams. I picked up some leg bands, some duratex food bowls, and some vitamins. It was a pretty fun day. Cant wait to go next year.

Here is a picture of the show calls I bought.
I still have to get a pic of the self blue old english bantams. The show calls were a little pricey, but they are the nicest white calls I have seen. I cant wait to hatch their babies.

The drake is on the right and the hen is on the left.

There were very few quality birds in the sales area , but there were some good call ducks. From what I observed, the sales area was a place for exhibitors to offload their junk. Really dissapointing. The strange thing is, there was no shortage of people scooping up the substandard stuff.

It still was a fun day though. My son tried as hard as he could to get someone to sell him a quality chicken to improve his flock, but nobody would help him out and part with anything but 5.00 poor quality silkies.

The silkies in the sale area were not great at all. But the old english I got were very nice. I took the nicest hen, which I would say is bq or sq, and I switched the rooster and took the nicest roo. What time were you there? The best birds sold out quick. There were some very nice bantam faverolles when I was there. I was very tempted

How bout a picture of the Old English??? There was one baby silkie left, but i was not looking for anything. I have 3 silkie eggs and 1 silkieXee bantam in the incubator now. You were smart to go early, I had to work til noon so we did not get there til 2 and most birds said sold on them. Your ducks are so perfect!!!!! It really paid off to go early for you.

I didn't even check here, I would have met up with some of youse. This morning, my friend woke me up so early to get going that I couldn't think straight and almost left the house without the directions. If I had been thinking right, I'd have met up for funnel cakes.

Don't know enough about doves/pigeons to say if the ones for sale there were any good. They were pretty, anyway. But yeah, other than the call ducks (which had all been sold by 11am) there wasn't a whole lot of good critters for sale.

Saw a very interesting, very aggressive African goose that wanted to show off his masculinity to all the other geese. He was pretty funny. A nice bronze turkey, some really pretty Polish. I think next year I will enter my golden Phoenix--there weren't any male Phoenix there at all, just a few Sumatras for longtails. There were a few Phoenix girls, but of widely varying quality, and I think the ones I got from Napalongtails are definitely better.

My friend started with quail and is slowly becoming an addict--she's splitting an order with me this spring but couldn't decide which kind to get and wanted to see what the different types looked like in real life. She's getting Jersey Giants now, and there were a lot of inappropriate comments and giggling about big male chickens on our part. If you were within earshot, I apologize...

By the sounds of things we probably walked right past some of you and didn't have the pleasure of meeting you. Anyone else here take any pictures inside the hall?? We took a few and will post them if they are of good enough quality.
