Northern NJ and Philly folks--need some help!

Hi-
I'm considering moving my family and our four silver-laced wyandotte hens from western Mass. to either Newark, NJ; New Brunswick, NJ; or Philadelphia, PA (for grad school). We've already fought the chicken battle once up here- and won- but we'd rather not do it again if possible. Does anyone know what the city regs. are in any of these places? Any input very much appreciated. The girls are coming with us no matter what! Thanks in advance!

I live very close to New Brunswick and I believe their rules state that you can only have hens. I'm not sure about the number of birds. Double check on the city's website for the actual code.

You have to keep in mind that New Brunswick is a city, not a suburb. There are several suburbs that border New Brunswick in which people own chickens (Piscataway, Highland Park, Edison). Have you checked out any other towns around the area?


Also, I'm not sure if you want to move close to Rutgers campus in Newark, but the downtown area where the colleges are located is not chicken-friendly. It's all apartments, restaurants, shops, etc. City officials are trying to clean up that whole area and give it a "college feel." There are other neighborhoods in Newark with homes with backyards, but I personally do not recommend moving your family there.
