Not an Emergency...Marek's in the Flock

I use whichever one I have. Corrid and Tylan can be used together. Sulfadimetoxine has some antibiotic qualities.

Sulfadimethoxine: bacterial pneumonia, coccidiosis, coryza, paratyphoid. 2 Tbls powder per gallon water for 5 days
liquid 1/2 tsp per gallon for 6 days

Corrid: Coccidiosis 20% powder, or 9.5% liquid.
Powder 1 tsp per gallon 5-7 days.
Liquid, 1/2 oz. per gallon 3-7 days in water. 1/2 oz= 1Tbls

Tylan: Respiratory infections. 1-2 tsp/gallon water for 5 days powder.
Tylan50 injectable: 1ml per day in muscle or subcutaneous 3-5 days

Penicillin: Lower respiratory infections, blood infections from skin wounds. (I like the injectable, 0.5ml per day). If it's too thick for your needle, draw up .1 or .2 ml of sterile saline or water to thin it.

This is what I use. Information is supplied by Twincitypoultrysupply.com

Twincitysupply medication guide says Corrid is for Cocci and Baytril is for CRD, Parathyroid, and one-eye colds. I don't know anymore than that because I don't use it. So someone else may have found info from somewhere else. Last year I had three get enteritis and died overnight without symptoms. But when I picked them up blood ran out. I used Corrid and Tylan on the rest because that's what I had, and saved 4. But lost 2 more to a one eyed infection. (Maybe I should have had Baytril for that!)

So does sulmet work better than corrid?
What I learned, and I'll try to keep it short...Corid [amprolium] is the best for coccidiosis. It kills all types of the coccidia by blocking the thiamine needed to reproduce and grow. As Seminole has said, the Marek's compromised birds are a different issue all together. It can work on some but not on others, the type of coccidia may be such that normal dosing with Corid just can't reach it anymore, the bird's gut just can't absorbe enough of it for affective treatment...I don't know the mechanics, but I do know that if a dosing of Corid doesn't work the first time, I switch to the Sulmet. This normally gets rid of the coccidia or at least kicks them back enough that the bird can take it from there. I have had a couple of cases where nothing worked. Nothing. There used to be a drug on the market that would treat the type these birds showed, but it was no longer available. If I could find my notebook, I could give you song and verse.

I have, once, treated with Corrid for 5 days, they still didn't look 100%, so then treated again with Sulfdimethoxine. Alternating to hit the tough bugs.

Best to catch as early as possible.

Mine have started to act lathargic, this is the third day, I'll treat them with corrid, and if that doesn't work, I'll get sulmet.
The ones that the Corid worked on here acted the same way, if I remember correctly. By the 5th and 6th day after the start of treatment, they were more like themselves.

Well, they didn't have corid, so I got sulmet, better then nothing! lol. Hope it works
Just a word to the wise here....in the future, Corid, when you can find it, is one of the drugs to have on hand at all times. I usually get my Corid 9.5% from Jeffers. It has a long shelf life and should be your first choice to fight cocci. Sulmet is not for plain cocci, it is more for the coccidia that causes the deeper attacks than it is for just plain coccidiosis. Now that sounds kind of strange but believe me it's true, lol. Maybe I should have said mild case of coccidiosis, where the Sulmet would be more for the enteritis or more serious kind. I understand it's all you could get right now and you should use something, that's for sure!

Another word of caution, lol, [I got a million of them], stop all medicated feed if you are giving it. Even though you are not using the Corid, the medicated feed can also interfere with the way the Sulmet works. Aside from the drug being hardcore, I was told there can be a negative reaction and a counterprodutive response.

They aren't on medicated feed, so no problem there. So it would be better to put them on corid??? I can probably find it somewhere ( I am surrounded by feed stores) It's just that in my area it is SUPER expensive, and the sulmet was cheaper. They have perked up, as before all of them were sleeping, drinking a ton, and not eating at all. If it's better, I can get them corid from somewhere.
