So, this will be the first time I've ever had chickens and I'm so excited, but I have SO many questions. I've read just about every pointer on this webpage and many other's, but none seem to answer the questions that I have. My little babies will arrive at the beginning of next month. I ordered three Silver Laced Wyandotte pullets. Now I'm wondering if I shouldn't have gotten two or three more. Is three too small to start out will? I was thinking about going and buying a couple more from Tractor Supply and just mixing them in when my other babies get delivered, that way there is no fussing, but will I need to separate them even though they are chicks? I know you are supposed to do that with grown hens, but what about baby chicks if they all came from reputable hatchery's?

Also, (and this may be a very stupid question) I was thinking about getting a rooster, but honestly, I don't have room for tons of baby chicks. I would like to hatch my own, but with all those hens won't I get tons of chicks? What do you guys do with your little chicks? I know you can't possibly keep them all! Anyways, I knew the people on here are very knowledgeable and I'm very excited to finally be in the loop!!!

Three would not be too few to start with. As long as there are two you are ok. Adding others is usually not a problem till there is over a month difference in age. Many urban places will not allow roosters so that may be a consideration. You won't have too many chicks if you eat the eggs! You can always sell or give the extra chicks away.

IF you can have a rooster (if the local restrictions don't allow it, or your neighbors complain about the noise, you may not be able to have one), it doesn't matter. You will have fertile eggs, and if you don't incubate them, or one of your hens doesn't go broody and insist on hatching her clutch of eggs, you can still eat them, or sell the eggs. There's no difference. And as Ron said, you can always sell the chicks or give them away.
