Not... :( Getting a 'bator for Christmas

I've hinted so much, eyes roll

..Still trying to find the best price...looked at Double R and Strombergs....any ideas?

Smitty's Farm :

Have you lurked on the Incubating/Hatching Section? The pictures that people have posted of the newly hatched chicks are just adorable.

Just think........that will be you come March. How many will you hatch for yourself? Will you need a new coop or will you try to interduce them to your existing flock?

Yes, I've been reading up on it. All babies are adorable. It's a survival tactic, I think. Unless the baby is a turken, and then I guess even ugly can be cute? (Bless their hearts)

I would have to order anything except Silkies, unless I want to hatch mutts. And I don't. So if I buy eggs I guess it would be 6-12 at a time. DH and I have already talked about building a bigger coop, a permanent one instead of a tractor. And keep the tractor for 'projects' (I mean breeding when I say this, he means cleaning the coop or making alterations to it).

What I add depends on what I end up with. I can't have another rooster without causing some stress, but I'd do it to have an Araucana roo to go with my EE girls!

I think I'd prefer to hatch a few at a time and see what I get until I get the hang of it.

How about you?

The ones on Stromberg are certainly reasonable! Very well explained and not too expensive for a basic unit. While I'd love to have one with all the bells & whistles, a $48 still air incubator is looking pretty good to my mind and my budget...

If I don't get a 'bator for Christmas, I may have to buy myself one of these...

I haven't really thought about it yet. I have a SLW roo and pullets, so that would be the only pure breed I could hatch from my own flock. Like you, I would love some Blue Egg layers of some kind. I think the silkies are adorable! I don't have any of those yet. I really don't know yet. I just think it would be a fun project to do. I definitely will have to figure out the coop space.
I will also start slow until I get the hang of it. At the moment I don't have any friends that would want any chickens. They all think I'm crazy for having them.

mom'sfolly :

I'm making MsPrissys incubator. I lurk on the incubating/hatching forum all the time. I'll be posting my questions before we start.

How's that going......making an incubator? Sounds complicated! I'll have to take a look at Miss Prissy's incubators. Let us know when you get all set up and ready.

It's a lot of fun lurking on that sight. Cute babies! I just may be brave enough to try it this spring.

I talked to DH1 (14) about doing her science project on hatching baby chicks. She called me sneaky, laughed, and said it sounded gross. <sigh>

My daughter is 14 also. I've been talking to her about it everyday. She's interested, but didn't want to do it at first, b/c of fear of more Roosters. She knows that usually more than one in a flock will fight and she doesn't like them messing with the girls. I think she's interested though. Mine is in chemistry right now, so I don't think they will do a science project this year. (Don't Know??)

Science project or not......I can tell you will be hatching this spring.
