Not... :( Getting a 'bator for Christmas

My daughter is 14 also. I've been talking to her about it everyday. She's interested, but didn't want to do it at first, b/c of fear of more Roosters. She knows that usually more than one in a flock will fight and she doesn't like them messing with the girls. I think she's interested though. Mine is in chemistry right now, so I don't think they will do a science project this year. (Don't Know??)

Science project or not......I can tell you will be hatching this spring.

Too funny! My daughter is not impressed with the activity of our roo, either. Sounds like we have a lot in common...

Yes, I will be hatching out chicks. But a good excuse would help quell DH's objections. Not that his objections will really change anything

It's like the Rbt. Heinlein quote about women & cats doing as they please and men & dogs gotta deal with it!

Exactly! I'm thinking the same thing, but have to get coop/space arrangements ready first. My first coop that my 16 chickens are living in now isn't finished yet. Just small things, like framing out pop door. We've had something going on almost every weekend, but hope to finish things up in the next few weeks, but for now they just have to live in the ghetto coop.

Does that mean you'll be hatching twice as many eggs?

Hmmmn. I wonder if my bro-in-law would send us one just to make his lil bro (my DH) mad? They have a tradition of sending gag gifts to one another...

You've given me a fiendishly clever plan, Iamaqte!

I'm so sad. DH said absolutely not. Even though I already have real homes for at least 6 of my imaginary hatchlings. DH is very serious about it right now. Even threatened to sabotage my set-up in order to make sure none of this went on in the house.

I'm a little consoled that he seems resigned to the fact that there will inevitably be a hen hatching something. He's seen the evidence of them making nests and considering brooding. Guess I'll have to wait and order some of the eggs I wanted for the incubator when one of the hens nest, then switch pedigreed eggs for our mutts. I'm not sure I want to see what an EE\\Silkie crosses looks like... Plus, my promised hatchlings were supposed to be BO's, not mutts.

I'm so sorry!

I know how much you've been wanting one. Are you sure DH is not just saying that and has already purchased one and wants it to be a total surprise.

Do you have some broody pullets? The only pure breed ours could hatch is SLW. The rest would be SLW/EE or SLW/RIR mixtures. Ours would be weird. At least the EE have lovely personalities..... like cuddly kitties.

I still have not been up to the attic to find the old one that is supposively there.

I'm certain he hasn't gotten me one. He was too serious about not getting into hatching babies. He said we can't afford another hobby, especially a living one. He told me to keep buying beads, since they're quiet, small, and don't eat (I'd offered to trade out hobbies).

And I know Mom hasn't gotten me an incubator. She said that was between me & DH, since she didn't want to be disowned

I reminded her that M-I-L are supposed to cause trouble; It's in their job description. She just laughed. I suspect DH pulled her aside during Thanksgiving and said "NO!"

We have a Silkie, who talks to the hens as if they are her chicks. And we have an EE that keeps pulling a fake egg out of the nestbox and making a nest on the ground for it. Really elaborate fluffy nests.

The EE's eggs are definitely fertile, since I've seen the bulls-eye on them. One BO has fertile eggs, too. The other seems to be holding out for DH

I'm sad about the incubator thing. I really wanted one in time for a spring hatch. I'm not giving up, though. There's always next year.
In the meantime, I guess I'll encourage the girls to think broody and shop for eggs to stash under them... And hope that all happens simultaneously!

Don't give up hope. I was hoping we could try the new adventure together.

Buying hatching eggs to set under a broody mom could be a lot of fun. That is so funny about the EE dragging the eggs to the ground to make a nest. I love all their quirky personalities.

I will keep my fingers crossed that you DH changes his mind. It could actually end up being a money maker, esp if you already have people lined up to take new babies. Try that out with him.

Yeah, I was looking forward to having a newbie buddy on this process too!

Guess you'd better not wait on me, though.

I think the fact that I had already lined up a waiting list is what upset DH the most. He didn't realize I was THAT serious about this. And so he seriously put his foot down.

I think what really scares him is that I might quit my real job if it went well. I already do Partylite & Avon, plus make and sell my own jewery. If I get any more home businesses going, I won't have ANY time left for him unless I quit the 8-4:30 gig. And he prefers the 8-4:30 as its a 'sure thing.' But I would MUCH rather do my OWN thing.

My favorite chicken is the EE that's making the nest. She's the one I nursed through pasty-butt, and is my most adventurous hen. First one to figure out new things, or explore new areas. And she jumps next to me on the swingset and 'talks' to me sometimes. But she does NOT want to be a lap chicken!
