Now that my bronchitis has receded to let me get out of bed and move around a little, I enlisted the 16yo, caught the 3-day-old chicks, and inspected their vents.

I *thought* this one had pasty butt, brought her in, and tried to wash it off. It didn't wash and felt hard when I tried to gently pinch it off as I've done before with severe pasty butt.

She squeaked about it. I thought I was pulling on the down so I stopped and decided to keep her in a bin inside for 10-15 minutes while it softened up from being wetting.

To my surprise, she pooped quite normally in her bin.

But she still has the hard, red thing.

What's up?

I put a dab of canola oil around her vent and around the whatever it is just in case it might help.

Prolapse?
I would keep it moist with oil or honey, see what happens.

I'm glad you're feeling a little better.

It's rock hard and doesn't soften when wetted.

Today's day 4 so I suppose that if there's any major internal malfunctions they'll show now that the yolk has run out.

If she makes it I had better band her to remind me not to breed her.

Well, that's interesting. I'll tag up @Eggcessive and @coach723 to see if they might have a better idea of what that is.
She's able to poop normally?
Eating/drinking on her own?

Thanks. I've had so few issues with my various batched of bought and hatched chicks so far that I don't even know who to tag. :D

She appears to be eating and drinking. She pooped while in the little bin on my desk and it looked perfectly normal.

Hopefully it's nothing too serious.
It's good that she's eating/drinking, it may turn out to be a wait and see type of thing.

I agree with Wyorp Rock that it looks like a prolapse. The important thing is to keep it moist with honey or oil so that it doesn’t dry out. I hope she makes it. Some chicks with prolapses make it and some don’t.

It is hard already. Like a rock and doesn't soften with water.

I would have caught it a day or two earlier except that I've been flat on my back with severe bronchitis. :(

I'll keep oiling it and see what happens. Then band her as a cull.
