I purchased two pullets at a poultry auction that look somewhere between Buff Cochin and Buff Orpington. They were sold as Cochins, but I thought Cochins have feathered feet? They ARE very big birds with tons of feathers, much bigger and fluffier than any Orpington I've had... maybe a cross? Or is there a 'production' Cochin that doesn't have feathered legs/feet?

Hopefully the picture helps (same as my avatar) - they have basically no comb - very short, and red, if that helps. Thanks for any help!

I am positive this is a buff orpington, the gold one below is what we have , she's six months. yea that picture i don't think is a cochin. maybe your orpington has good genetics for size and fluffy feather, but i orpingtons definately get as big as the one shown above in partimefarmer picture

That's what I was figuring. She's young, beautiful, sweet, and will start laying soon, so doesn't matter much to me whether she's a Cochin/Orpington/mix, just thought it would be nice to know!

Maybe I need to find a nice big Buff Orp rooster and have some pretty little (big?!) babies!

Buff's look HUGE, how old is your buff??? parttime farmer?, my buff orpington isn't as big as your buff orpington and she has laid for several months. i have a six month old hen. i think you just have a big blessed orpington hen. i've seen 7 buffy's togethor at one time and the difference between the larghest and smallest bird was significant. the legs are bigger and fluffier on your's.

MAYBE YOUR"S IS A COCHIN, look at the color on my hen's orpington legs, they are white, yours are yellow you may have a COCHIN in the house.

She is more than double the size of my full-grown White Leghorns, and is a pullet (hasn't laid yet) so under 6 months old, I imagine. She was an auction purchase, so not 100% sure of how old.

Her legs are bigger around than my thumb, and she's heavy!

I also read that maybe she could be a buff rock... the mystery deepens!

**EDIT** Google searches for "Buff Rock" come up looking just like her, and describe her huge yellow legs and heavy body perfectly. Luckily she should be a prolific layer!
