My name is Sherry and I'm a new member but don't know where to go to do the introduction. There is so much information and places to click that I feel like I'm going around in circles.

I decided to join because a lot of times when I looked up things on the web about chickens, this site had a lot of information and I thought that I should somehow contribute instead of just looking.

Anyway, I have 17 chickens, three are roosters (!) (one older barred rock, one 6-month old barred rock, one year old silkie), 2 are buff orpingtons who have either retired or are just molting--I got them as adults so not sure of their age-- three are leghorns who keep laying like crazy, one is a little year-old silkie hen that lays quite a bit, one is a six-month old RIR who just started laying, one is a buff orpington who is still laying and six are 2 1/2-month old chicks--two speckled sussex, two chanteclers, 2 silkies, all guaranteed to be hens except maybe not the silkies because they couldn't tell.

I love talking about my chickens and reading about other chickens but spend a lot of time outside with my animals so don't get a lot of time to post. Recently had a sick orpington who I was researching about how to euthanize and after going over and over on this site, I decided to do it finally and when I went in to get her, she had died. So sad but I so appreciated all the information and encouragement on this site.

Some people on this site consider chickens to be livestock and some consider them pets. I'm definitely in that latter category but appreciate all people raising their own chickens. All of my chickens have names and personalities, as do my horses, goats, cats, donkey and dog. And, my patient husband who had chickens as a kid and was afraid of roosters when I first got chickens. He tolerates a lot.

Thank you for the site and even though I don't always comment, I am paying attention. I just don't get on it to write a lot because as you can see, I have a hard time stopping.

But is sounds like you have lots of animals keeping you company! (And busy LOL!) Be sure to check out our learning center. Also, you can look around and find other horse, goat, dog, cat and donkey owners.

Hi, and welcome to the flock!!!
You seem to have figured things out pretty well so far - this is the perfect place for an intro. Look forward to hearing more from you!

Welcome to BYC, Sherry! You are in the right place for introductions. Sorry about the lost of your Orpington. We're glad you decided to constribute, and if you have not looked at it yet, you should browse the Learning Center (a lot of useful information in it). You have a nice, mixed flock. I like the Buff Orpingtons for their beautiful feathers and calm, gentle temperament. What color are your Silkies?

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

So sorry for your loss. It is never easy to lose them. But it sounds like you are enjoying your flock! Yes, they can really become part of the family. I think naming chickens helps you understand them more and if you can identify each bird, you can care for them a whole lot better.

Enjoy all your poultry adventures and welcome to our flock!

I have one white silkie rooster, one gold silkie hen and the chicks are grey speckled and black. Yes, I love my orpingtons. One of them talks to me incessantly and isn't real crazy about the roosters. When one comes after her she comes and pecks my leg, then squats so I will pick her up. My silkie rooster is a goof ball and she doesn't seem to mind him too much so she stays in with him most of the time. I have separate areas for my chickens to keep them happy but need to get another coop built. See what I mean about not being able to stop?

What are your chickens?

Am trying to figure out how to get a picture to go with my posts so I can show off some of my chickens.

What a fun site this is and thank all of you who have replied!

What are your chickens?
I currently have 7 Black Sex Link hens, 7 Black Australorp hens, 4 Buff Orpington hens, and 7 Easter Egger hens. I don't have any Silkies at the present time, but I used to have some Black Silkies and they were very tame, friendly little birds that raised quite a few broods for me. Good luck with your flock.
