I am new to this site as a member but I have come here a few times to find out answers for my chicken questions. Today when I was collecting eggs I took notice that our one hen Taco had swollen feet. I mentioned this to my husband before he left for work and he said he heard of bumblefoot and thats what it might be. I've looked up a few sites for info but I'm not sure what exactly to do. If it is that do I remove her from the others until it is clear or after tending to her feet do I just bandage her feet and leave her with the others? Below I have 2 pics I took to show my husband.

She does not look like she is in pain and is walking normal and I did see her eating. What exactly should I do to help her? I appreciate any help

With bumblefoot, if you look at the bottom of the feet there will be a round dark scab. One of my girls currently has it also, VERY badly. You may have to preform surgery on her, but I have heard of people using Tricide Neo. Just search bumblefoot in the search bar of BYC and you will find some facts about it and what to do.

Yes I can see the scab on her foot on the left. Surgery is the quickest most effective way to deal with it. You can try the neocide soak but it didn't work for mine. Mine was as advanced as yours looks to be.

I can see the scab also. Surgery is quick, but painful for the chickens. I've heard Tricide Neo works very well. Soak feet in it for seven minutes twice a day until it is completely gone. Before you do it, maybe rinse her feet in Epsom Salt. It might take a while, but it isn't painful for them. Surgery is VERY messy, and you need a bunch of supplies in order to do it.

I just had a hard time trying to hold her and to be able to see what I was doing. She didn't act like it hurt really. The vet put her under though when they did it and was able to do a really good job cleaning it out. I am just going to try to keep a check on them to stop it before it gets too far.

Thank you very much for the replies. I told my husband about the surgery and he said he would rather not try and do that because it would probably be painful to her. We were going to try and do the soaking first. How much of the Tricide Neo and then also the Epsom salt do you add to warm water for the 2 foot baths? I had seen on a few sites that they should be kept seperate from the others but if we wrap her feet with gauze and vet tape after the soaks will we be able to keep her with the others? We don't have a seperate area right now to put her since we also have a young hen from a different group seperated that I have been treating for crook neck for about 7 weeks now (she is much better and only has the occasional attack). But if we need to seperate Taco also we will have to figure something out for her. Also can the Tricide Neo and vet tape be bought at a pet store? Sorry for all the questions. Just want to make sure we do this right.

On the container of the Epsom salt it will tell you how much to add to the warm water. They do not have to be seperate from the other chickens as long as their feet are wrapped up (I have had a hen with bumblefoot. We wrapped up her feet and put her back with the other chickens because we didn't have a seperate area for her either). The vet tape can be bought at the pet store, CVS, etc. Easy to find. I believe with the Tricide Neo you have to order it online. Between $20 and $30 I believe. I do not know how much Tricide Neo you have to add, you would have to find out from someone who has used it before. :) It's fine for all the questions! I would be doing exactly what you are. :)

Thank you luvinmychickens for your help

. I called the Rite Aid by us and they said they have their brand of the vet wrap and then the Tricide Neo I found on www.ponddoc.us for a total with shipping of $33.40 (which was cheaper then another site which they wanted $37 total). I also did some more research and found for the Tricide Neo to mix 1/4 of a gallon of the solution (about 1 1/3 teaspoon) with 1/4 gallon of distilled water and that the mixture will last for 5 days before having to make a fresh batch if more is needed. Also saw someone say that after doing an Epsom salt soak in the morning and then the Tricide Neo soak in the evening they put an anti inflammatory on the gauze and wrapped the feet. So I think I will try that also. So hopefully it won't take long to ship the Tricide Neo so I can start her treatments. Thank God she is still walking around so I'm hoping that means it's not too bad.

you can make an even smaller batch since it is just soaking the feet and make it go further also. Good luck and keep us posted.
