Has anyone ever heard of telling the sex of a chick by spreading their wings out and if there is a third layer of feathers it's a female. Two layers of feathers is a male? At 4-6 weeks I think.

Here is a current pic of Blue. 6 weeks old. Thoughts on gender? Her crest is more red than the others but she's my only light brahma so I have no comparison...

Feather sexing can only be done with very young chicks whose parents have the correct genetics.

. Thank you for clearing that up. We hear and read so many things. I am waiting to see which of my chics crow or lay eggs. That will be exciting.

Can you post a picture without you handling? Sometimes the stress can cause the comb and wattles to flush brighter than they usually are.

So we got 2 straight run silkie/RIR X from a friend feb 2 (they were 4 weeks old) everyone was sure they were both hens but I got a rooster today and one of the "hens" went crazy attacking him. Now we don't know. Captain was the one who was aggressive and her hatchmate Penguin is on the smaller side but their combs don't look rooster. These 2 plus the rooster are all around 12 weeks
