Not Sure If You've Got A Pullet Or Cockerel? Click Here! Thread 2

Thanks junbuggena! In your opinion is it okay to keep two cockerals in a run with a tiny silkie pullet. She is 14 weeks old and they tend to gang up on her. Will this eventually get better?
If they are giving immature pullets too much 'attention', then they should be removed, at least until the girls are mature. They are hormone fueled, teenage boys right now. All testosterone and no sense or self control.
Whether or not you keep them, long term, depends on how many pullets you have, and how much room you have for a flock. A good ratio for females to males is 10 to 1. Any less, and those girls can end up very stressed.

[/quoteOh wow! I have 7 all together. 4 females (2 EE's, 1 silkie, 1 orpington). I have 3 males (2 orpingtons and 1 silkie) My silkie rooster is bossy but very protective over the female silkie. I really don't think he would cause any harm. Not sure about orpington roosters though. My husband wants me to just take the two orpington rooster out and let them free range. I doubt they would last very long out here.

Free range, without any coop for them at night? Not a good idea at all. Either rehome them or wait till they are about 14 to 16 weeks old and butcher them. Chickens are pretty much helpless during the nighttime hours. And if you've ever seen the aftermath of what a racoon will do to a chicken, you would never even consider it. Death by predator is not humane.

Okay.....I don't want to chance that so I will rehome. Thanks for your advice.

thank you. can you tell us how long can we keep the two males together in the same coop/run with out them fighting? they are already pecking me when i go in there lol!

It's different depending on breed. My silver laced wyandottes never fought and now currently live together on a farm. My olive egger cockerels are only 5 weeks and a few have become very aggressive. You will know when you see it. :)

My 12 week old buff brahma "hen" is developing bright orange/rust feathers on her shoulders. I have posted about her here a couple of weeks ago and was told she is most likely a hen. The new bright feathers make me wonder though. No long saddle feathers yet, but she does have a pinkish comb with all three bumpy rows and now is starting to geow in tiny rosy waddles. She is also the chunkiest of my four brahmas. Still a hen?
