Not Sure If You've Got A Pullet Or Cockerel? Click Here! Thread 2

No, so we are actively trying to rehome him. Besides, we only have 3 chickens in total so it's not a good ratio anyway. Even though we've been preparing my daughter for this likelihood she sobbed when we heard him crow.

Awww... I'm so sorry. How old is your girl? Mine is ten, and our 5 1/2 week old French Black Copper Maran just tried a skreeky crow, and is getting those arching tail feathers. I also prepared her for it, and I think she is okay with it. She's more attached to our big, cuddly laying hens.

I hope your daughter feels better and I hope you find a good home for the beautiful guy. Wish I could take him! Wish I could keep mine.

So I purchased this "hen" as a 3 month old beautiful pullet that was all black and white. since then "she" has grown beautiful orange hackle , no spurs and begun to crow like a rooster. we have a mixed flock w 2 buffs, 5 silkie and 3 young pullets. this black one apparantly must be laying a very large brown egg as there are black feathers in the nest box and a BIG Brown egg. her behavior has us baffled.

Am I crazy or is this a hen?

Butterscotch has male specific saddle and hackle feathers. Definitely a cockerel.
Hi, friendly chicken experts! I thought I'd throw a side-query at you. My alpha laying hen, Ginger Lily, has a large red comb and a rear view that looks like a cockerel's. Do you think that a hen can have more testosterone than others, which can make her hen-in-charge and give her slightly roosterish features? I've been wondering about this a while, but can't find any research on it.

Picture? In many breeds, females have very large combs.

Ha! Fascinating. I think we should start a thread for roosterish hens. I am wondering if hormone levels can create this kind of situation, but I have not been able to find info on it. I did read that a hen can actually transform into a rooster if an ovary is damaged. http://www.urbanchickenpodcast.com/ucp-episode-018/

Always happy to go out and look at my hens!

Here she is, head and tail. I am guessing she will look just like a proper hen to you, but she looks so different from her sister, Meg (also a Red Sex Link). And she is very bossy. Thanks for helping out with novice questions.

Looks like a completely normal red sexlink hen. Nothing even close to resembling a rooster.
